Gary Oldman is set to reunite with director Christopher Nolan in the upcoming period thriller Oppenheimer. The film already features a stacked star cast, comprising Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and more. However, Oldman’s role won’t be a major one, and it only involves a day of filming.

Gary Oldman is currently busy doing press for his spy thriller series Slow Horses, which premiered on Apple TV+ on April 1. Oldman recently appeared on the U.K. radio station TalkSport, and when asked if he was involved in any projects other than the Apple TV+ original, the Batman Begins star confirmed that he’ll cameo in Oppenheimer and then only has Slow Horses to look forward to.

Gary Oldman played Batman’s ally, Jim Gordon, in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy from 2005 to 2012. He has since starred in several blockbusters and serious dramas like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Mank, and Darkest Hour. For his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Oldman won his first and long-overdue Academy Award for Best Actor. Fans have been waiting for Nolan and Oldman to collaborate again, and it looks like their wish is about to come true, although not how one would have expected, as Oldman will only appear in one scene. There is currently no word on what character Gary Oldman will be playing in Oppenheimer.

“Chris Nolan is working on a new film about Oppenheimer, and [I’m there for] one day. One scene. A page-and-a-half. I work on that at some point I think a day and night. But for the foreseeable future, I’m hoping to continue working on the Slow Horses series and we’ll see if people watch it and they like it and then maybe the people upstairs at Apple give us another crack at the whip.”

Christopher Nolan Has Assembled a Ridiculously Stacked Star Cast for Oppenheimer

     Legendary Pictures

Christopher Nolan is known for being a perfectionist and going to great lengths while making his films. His next undertaking, Oppenheimer, is a $100 million period thriller about the making of the atomic bomb and its creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Although it gives the impression of being a clear-cut biography, nothing is so simple when Christopher Nolan is directing a film. Oppenheimer is billed as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”

Along with its massive budget and scale, Oppenheimer also boasts a high-profile ensemble featuring dozens of Hollywood’s A-list actors. Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy will play the titular scientist, with Emily Blunt playing his wife, Katherine Oppenheimer. Other actors cast in Oppenheimer include Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Jason Clarke, James D’Arcy, Josh Peck, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Dylan Arnold, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, Kenneth Branagh, David Dastmalchian, Scott Grimes, Christopher Denham, Alex Wolf, Tony Goldwyn, and Gustaf Skarsgard.

Based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer will be Nolan’s 12th feature film and his first with Universal Pictures after the director parted ways with Warner Bros. over its handling of Tenet’s theatrical distribution.

Oppenheimer will be released exclusively in theaters on July 21, 2023.
