It’s been a long time coming, but the long-gestating Gears of War movie will finally be moving forward. On Monday, which marks the 16th anniversary of the video game’s release, Netflix officially announced that the streamer will be adapting Gears of War into a live-action feature film. If that wasn’t enough, also announced is an animated series that will further flesh out this new world inspired by the games, similar to what we’ve already seen Netflix do with The Witcher.
The official announcement from Netflix, which was posted to Twitter, reads: “Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War video game saga into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow!”
It’s been many years that there have been rumors of Gears of War getting made into a movie, but the project just could not ever seem to make its way out of development hell. Earlier this year, producer Dylan Clark provided a positive update on the planned film, teasing back in March that there would soon “be an announcement.” It would seem that things were probably looking good for the adaptation’s chances at Netflix at the time.
Gears of War Will Finally Become a Feature Film
Fans might now be wondering if Dave Bautista will get the offer to star in the Gears of War movie. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility as he has already led a Netflix movie as one of the stars of Army of the Dead. Bautista is also a big fan of Gears of War and personally pitched a movie adaptation to Warner Bros., though it was passed upon at that time. He was brought into Gears of War 5 as a playable character in 2019 as that was the next best thing to starring in the unmade film.
“I don’t make any pretense about it,” Bautista said of his desire to star in the film in a Collider interview. “I had a chance to get a meeting at WB, they were talking to me about this and that, and I said ‘Hey, let’s talk about Bane.’ That happened to me one other time in my career. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said ‘I’m not interested, let’s talk about [Gears of War character] Marcus Fenix.’”
Time will tell if Bautista gets involved with the film and/or animated series. At this time, neither has been given an official premiere date.
