For more than a decade, a big-screen adaptation of the hugely popular video game Gears of War has been stuck in development. Now one of the proposed project’s producers, Dylan Clark, has offered a promising update on the Gears of War movie, revealing that we should hear some concrete updates very soon. Speaking with The Digital Fix, Clark said…

Created by Epic Games, developed and managed by The Coalition, and owned and published by Xbox Game Studios, Gears of War is a third-person shooter and focuses on the conflict between humanity and the subterranean reptilian hominids known as the Locust Horde. Featuring giant men battling even more giant monsters, Gears of War became one of the best-selling franchises for the Xbox 360, with fans having waited patiently for the explosive action to make the transition from video game to the silver screen.

“I’m glad that you’re interested in it. It’s something it’s been a passion of mine for a very long time. I think very soon there will be an announcement.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

It was all the way back in 2007 that New Line Cinema purchased the rights to make a Gears of War movie, with Stuart Beattie, Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey on board to write the script. Director Len Wiseman, who is best known for helming Die Hard 4 and several installments in the Underworld franchise, was then attached to direct the project with the intention to begin filming in 2009.

Wiseman officially signed onto the video game project in 2008, with plans in place to make the movie a prequel to the games, but the Gears of War movie began having problems getting off the ground in 2010, with Wiseman dropping out and the budget being slashed. In recent years there have been various confirmations and whispers regarding Gears of War, including that F. Scott Frazier will write the movie, but not much else has emerged about the project. Here’s hoping that, at long last, the Gears of War movie is finally moving forward.

One man who will have his fingers double-crossed while waiting for some positive developments on the Gears of War movie is Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista. Often chosen for a central role by fans, the wrestler-turned-actor has been wanting to star in the video game project for some time and even pitched an idea to Warner Bros.

“I don’t make any pretense about it,” Bautista revealed. “I had a chance to get a meeting at WB, they were talking to me about this and that and I said ‘hey, let’s talk about Bane.’ That happened to me one other time in my career. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said ‘I’m not interested, let’s talk about [Gears of War character] Marcus Fenix’…”

With other long-gestating video game projects such as Halo making their way into live-action, do you think now is the time to finally get Gears of War going?
