As Genndy Tartakovsky’s critically acclaimed show is nearing the premiere of its second season, the veteran animator is nowhere close to done. Earlier this week, he sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about what comes next. From his answers, Tartakovsky has some promising stuff coming our way!
Almost two years after season one finished, season two of Primal is finally coming this month! The show will premiere its first two episodes July 21st on Adult Swim, and will be available for streaming on HBO Max the next day. The rest of the ten episode season will air a new episode weekly afterwards, until the season finale on September 15th.
This release doesn’t mean Tartakovsky is done, actually he’s far from it. According to Entertainment Weekly, the director is pushing forward on two other projects. These two projects have something very much in common, that being they were both nearly impossible to get off the ground! The first is a ten-episode series titled Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. The synopsis immediately fits in with a few titles that Tartakovsky is already very familiar with. If you grew up with Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, or the Cartoon Network Star Wars: The Clone Wars series (the 2-D animated one), then you have Tartakovsky to thank. The synopsis might also remind animation fans of another Tartakovsky show, Symbiotic Titan, which was a commercial failure but a passion project and cult favorite. After Tartakovsky’s departure from Cartoon Network, no other station wanted anything to do with the project. It sat in limbo for almost twenty years until HBO Max finally picked it up. There is no release date as of yet, but fans are hoping for a release date sometime this year.

The next project Tartakovsky mentioned is Fixed, which has officially started production. According to Tartakovsky, this was a project he has been trying to get off the ground for twelve years, and Sony Pictures Animation is finally throwing him a bone. Tartakovsky has already had history with the studio after creating their popular Hotel Transylvania film series. The synopsis from Sony can be read below.
Tartakovsky is one of those figureheads in animation that keeps his passion alive, which not only takes determination but also patience. Both traits are a requirement if you’re in a creative field, sometimes it will take years before a studio or figurehead will see something promising in your pitch.
