A very scary moment happened behind the scenes during the production of the 2007 movie P.S. I Love You, as star Gerard Butler has revealed. In the romantic drama, directed by Richard LaGravenese, Hilary Swank stars as a married woman whose life is forever changed upon the death of her husband, played by Butler. After his death, she starts to receive letters he’d written before his passing, helping to help guide her navigate through the loss and move on to the next chapter of her life.
But it was almost Swank who came close to actually losing her life while on the set of that film, according to Butler. The Plane star recently appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show (per Variety) and reflected on his time working on that film. He shared the story of how he was filming one particular scene where he’s dancing while wearing suspenders, and it was then when he inadvertently sliced his co-star’s head open. As the actor explains:

With blood drawn, Swank was hospitalized, leaving Butler to weep alone in his underwear back on the set, riddled with guilt.

Clearly both professional and tough, Swank quickly recovered from the accident and soon returned to the set to finish filming. Perhaps we shouldn’t expect anything less from someone who’s starred in her own Karate Kid movie as well as the ultra-violent horror-comedy film The Hunt. It worked out in the end, as the film was a box office success, scoring more than $156 million with a budget of $30 million. Swank also garnered the People’s Choice Irish Film and TV Award for Best International Actress with her role in the film.
P.S. I Love You was co-written by Steven Rogers and director Richard LaGravenese. It is based on the book of the same name by Cecelia Ahern. Along with Butler and Swank, it stars Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr., Gina Gershon, Kathy Bates, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
