It was one of the biggest movie events of the year, and now we know that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be available for digital purchase on January 4, 2022. BluRay and DVD versions will release on February 1, 2022.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is canonically considered to be the third movie in the Ghostbusters franchise after 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Jason Reitman, who wrote and directed the film, referred to it at one point as a love letter to the franchise, the fans and his father. The younger Reitman took his time in crafting a story that would continue the story of the original two movies while telling a completely new story at the same time. It is an incredibly difficult line to walk and audiences responded well to it.

The cast of Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a mix of old and new. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver all reprised their roles from the earlier movies. Joining them were Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor.

Very little controversy exists about Ghostbusters: Afterlife, save for Paul Feig, director of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, being upset that his movie was ignored by the film. Sony has responded by including a digital code for his film in the special collection that includes all three canon films.
