The Scream franchise is switching location for the first time in Scream 6, as Ghostface heads off to traumatize more teens – and Courteney Cox – in New York City. But, they say a change is as good as a rest, and since the franchise has already had the latter, the new movie will continue to make a case for another sequel by taking away the familiar suburbs of Woodsboro and replacing it with the busy streets and towering skyscrapers of the iconic U.S. city. One fan poster for Scream 6 has utilized the new setting in an ingenious way that plays to the meta-sense of fun that the Scream franchise has utilized from the start and incorporates one of the most iconic scenes ever set in New York City.

The poster shared by @nsfxstudios on Instagram is a brilliantly constructed mash-up of Scream and King Kong, which sees Ghostface gripping the top of the Empire State Building surrounded by bi-planes in a direct homage to the final dramatic scenes of 1933’s King Kong and its many remakes. Ghostface will be coming to a new playground in March, and the first trailer has already shown how this new masked killer is bringing scary back to the character. Having carried out killings in the haunting quiet of Woodsboro for so many years, the sight of Ghostface wielding a shotgun in a crowded store immediately brings a new sense of urgency and fear to the franchise, revitalizing it in a way that would have made creator Wes Craven proud.

Scream 6 Is Looking to Reinvent The Franchise Once Again
Paramount Pictures
Like most horror franchises, the Scream series has seemed to be at an end multiple times, but it just keeps on coming back. While nowhere near the number of sequels as the likes of Halloween or Friday the 13th, the franchise seems to have run its course for a story that relies on a small number of people and a constantly changing killer.
However, the location switch-up in this latest movie has certainly given fans something new. Just like Wes Craven himself did with the original Scream and his Freddy Krueger-based Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Scream 6 is redefining what makes the horror genre popular and, at the same time, giving a new killer with the same face a new set of challenges to get around to do their killings.
This time, only Courteney Cox will be returning from the original movie’s line-up, with Neve Campbell having dropped out due to a pay dispute. However, Hayden Panettiere reprises her Scream 4 role as Kirby, and Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera are back in their respective Scream (5) roles as Tara and Sam. With a handful of new characters lining up to be dispatched in gruesome fashion, there is no way of knowing who will survive this latest Ghostface killer or how the franchise will set up the inevitable seventh installment, which may or may not see the return of Neve Campbell again as Sydney Prescott.
