The long-awaited Gladiator 2 is the sequel to Ridley Scott’s epic film, and it is finally on its way, with a release date set for November 22, 2024. Deadline reports that Paul Mescal, whose breakout performance in Aftersun made him a household name, will be leading the film.
The film has been in development for some time, with the first draft of the script delivered last November. Since then, Scott has been searching for the most suitable actor to lead the film, considering many well-known names such as Richard Madden, Timothée Chalamet, Miles Teller, and Austin Butler. However, in the end, it was Mescal who emerged as Scott’s top choice.
Once again, Scott will direct the sequel, with David Scarpa writing the script. Janty Yates and Arthur Max, who were both part of the original film, will be back as Costume Designer and Production Designer, respectively. Scott will also act as producer, along with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher.
We already learned that the movie is set to premiere in late 2024, and there is also confirmation that filming will begin in March of this year. Excitement for the film has been brewing among fans ever since the release of the original film, regarded by many as one of the best modern action films of all time. Despite the fact that the release date is still a long way off, the buzz around the movie continues to grow, with fans eagerly counting down the days until its release.
Mescal Joins the Cast as Lucius

Rather than replacing Russell Crowe’s Maximus, Mescal will portray a different character. In the sequel, he will act as Lucius, son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, the son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius. As the original film showed, Maximus saved Lucius and his mother while avenging his own family, a lasting influence on the boy.
Mescal received his first Academy Award nomination for his performance in Aftersun and also earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for the series Normal People. He was also featured in last year’s God’s Creatures, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
As a result of the casting of Mescal as the lead and the return of key members of the original film’s crew, this sequel has all the makings of being an exciting and epic experience.
