Knives Out sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is currently in theaters, but only for a week, and is doing incredibly well at the box office. Released in just 600 theaters across the country, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has so far made an impressive $15 million since it landed on big screens on November 23.

According to a report via Variety, and “based on informed estimates,” the Knives Out sequel garnered an approximate total of $13 million over the extended Thanksgiving weekend, which equates to $19,000 per theater. This would translate to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery reaching the third spot in the domestic office rankings behind Marvel outing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the Disney animated adventure Strange World. One cannot help but wonder how well the Netflix outing would have done had it been given a wider theatrical release.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery finds Benoit Blanc returning to peel back the layers in an all-new whodunit. This fresh adventure finds the intrepid detective at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles.

Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. Among those on the guest list are Miles’ former business partner Andi Brand, current Connecticut governor Claire Debella, cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint, fashion designer and former model Birdie Jay and her conscientious assistant Peg, and influencer Duke Cody and his sidekick girlfriend Whiskey. As in all the best murder mysteries, each character harbors their own secrets, lies and motivations. When someone turns up dead, everyone is a suspect.

Much like its predecessor, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has amassed a star-studded supporting cast, with the sequel set to feature Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami…, The Many Saints of Newark), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Antebellum), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame), Madelyn Cline (Boy Erased, Outer Banks), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone, Moon Knight).

Knives Out 3 Will Be Rian Johnson’s Next Movie

Director Rian Johnson is eager to continue the cases of Benoit Blanc, with the filmmaker stating recently that Knives Out 3 will be his next movie. Hopefully. “I had for a while thought that maybe I should do something else first […] But the God’s honest truth is, I had so much fun making this one, and the creative challenge of figuring out a third movie that’s completely different from both this one and the first one — right now, that’s the most interesting creative challenge to me. So I might just dive in and see what we come up with,” he said of bringing the threequel to screens as soon as possible.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery began its one-week limited theatrical release on November 23, 2022, with the whodunit receiving the widest theatrical release ever for a Netflix movie. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will land on the streaming platform on December 23, 2022.
