Knives Out was an unexpected hit in 2019, and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion has improved on it in every way possible. After being given a hugely successful, if very limited, theatrical release, the sequel has become Netflix’s third most-watched movie within 10 days of release with over 200 million hours watched since its debut on the platform
Glass Onion drew very respectable 82.1 million hours in its first two days on release just before Christmas, which has been in addition to 127.25 million hours viewed in its first full week. According to Deadline, this has made the Daniel Craig movie Netflix’s third most watched movie within the first 10 days behind Red Notice and Don’t Look Up, which amassed a respective 364.02 million and 359.79 million hours.

Currently, Glass Onion has just broken into the Top 10 of Netflix’s all-time list, which is based on the first 28 days of a movie or show’s release on the platform. With 18 days still to go on that measure, Glass Onion will likely climb up the ranks of Netflix’s biggest movies thanks to its continued positive reviews and word of mouth.
Knives Out 3 Is Currently Being Written By Rian Johnson
Netflix
Following the success of Knives Out, Netflix paid out a huge amount to secure two sequel cases for Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc and it is a gamble that seems to have paid off so far. With Glass Onion gaining almost flawless praise, Rian Johnson is now working on the next mystery for the enigmatic detective to solve. He prevously told Wired:
Johnson’s comments were in relation to the limited theatrical run of Glass Onion, which drew criticism from some industry experts. The movie made a reported $15 from only a very small number of theaters, which is something that many believed left a lot of earning potential untapped in favor of gaining a larger streaming audience. However, Johnson clearly hopes that by the time Knives Out 3 arrives, a larger scale theatrical release could be on the cards. He added:
“It’s such a weird time right now because I’m just starting to work on writing the next mystery movie, and it’ll be a few years before it comes out and God only knows what the landscape’s gonna look like at that point. I feel like trying to guess where we’re gonna be next is maybe a fool’s errand.”
Glass Onion and Knives Out are both currently streaming on Netflix.
“It’s very, very important to me. And with the Benoit Blanc movies, what’s fun about making them is really trying to do the Hitchcock thing of playing the audience like a piano, so just standing in the back of theaters and watching Glass Onion play with crowds, it’s been such an exhilarating experience. It’s like a drug. My hope is theatrical. My hope is that however it happens, that theatrical will find a way to come back and kind of solidify and find its form in the culture. I feel like it’s something that people still want."
