Glass Onion’s ending seems prefect enough as it is, but Rian Johnson recently revealed details about a post-credit scene that was almost included in the movie which would have changed one of the movie’s iconic scenes. During an interview for Empire’s Spoiler Special podcast, Johnson explained how a big Mona Lisa moment was almost undone by the proposed post-credits stinger. He said:

“We also shot a little coda which we decided not to use, with Blanc on the phone speaking French and getting a little affirmation of ‘ah, oui, oui, merci’ and cutting to an office in the Louvre where the real Mona Lisa is, with the security guards saying ‘well, back to work’, but that pulls a punch, I like that the real painting gets destroyed in the movie.

We got a very talented, local Belgrade artist to do a recreation of the Mona Lisa and it was kind of extraordinary having it on set. I didn’t realize this, but if you get a recreation like this, you have to destroy them when you’re done filming, if it’s a famous work of art. You actually have to document yourself burning the canvas because of the counterfeit market. Daniel was a bit worried that we were ‘killing the puppy’ by upsetting people as we destroyed the Mona Lisa, but the scene in Bean where he destroys ‘Whistler’s Mother’ is one of the funniest scenes in cinematic history, so I figured we’d get away with this. That scene is so good.”

How Many Movies Could Be In Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Series?

While Knives Out was an unexpected hit, Glass Onion simple proved the point that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc could find a place among the great screen detectives of the last hundred years. The movie was never written as a sequel in the usual sense, as it has no recurring characters other than Blanc, and it doesn’t matter what order you watch Glass Onion and Knives Out in as they can be enjoyed in any order. This was always Johnson’s plan, as rather than look at the franchise like a progressive story of Blanc, he wants it to be an endless string of cases similar to the likes of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Johnson previously said:

Knives Out 3 is currently being developed by Johnson, and will round out the initial contract with Netflix. Whether there will be more Benoit Blanc movies to come is currently unknown, but with Johnson and Daniel Craig both up for more mysteries, and audience volumes indicating that fans are on board, the threequel will likely not be the last we see of Benoit Blanc.

“Part of the fun of these things is the idea that they’re not sequels, they’re completely new books and they’re completely new stories. To me, the idea for the next one — and I’m going to try to stay in this state of mind as I write it — it’s not about trying to top the previous one, it’s about just trying to create something that surprises us and thus hopefully will surprise the audience and thus delight the audience.”
