After Glee star Cory Monteith tragically passed away this summer, many wondered what the future would hold for the hit Fox musical series. During last night’s Paley Center panel, series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that the show will come to an end after Season 6. Here’s what he had to say, revealing that the actor’s death forced him to re-work the show’s ending
The executive producer also said that he has a new ending worked out that pays tribute to Cory Monteith and his Finn character.
“The whole [last] year of the show - which will be next year - was really designed around Rachel-Cory/Finn story. I always knew that. I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was - he was in it. I knew what the last line was; she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do.”
Back in April, Fox renewed Glee for Season 5, which is currently airing, and Season 6. Fox president Kevin Reilly revealed in August that Season 6 would likely be the show’s final season.
“I think it’s very satisfactory and kind of in his honor, which I love.”

Series star Chris Colfer also revealed in August that he is fine with the show ending after next season.
“I would not anticipate it goes on. Never say never, but there’s two very clear arcs to get to there and conclude. If we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout, who knows. But right now, it’s being treated as two seasons [and then done].”
Fox hasn’t confirmed whether or not Glee will close out its run after Season 6, so stay tuned for that announcement.
“Where would you go after a sixth season? I think six is a really good number and it’s a good amount of time to spend with these characters.”
