Kate Hudson and Glen Powell sat down and spoke to Variety about their friendship and mutual respect for each other’s projects. Hudson and Powell share a friendship with Tom Cruise and met through Hudson’s brother, actor Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), before becoming drinking buddies. Powell and Russell did a film together called, Everybody Wants Some!! Powell was seen recently in Top Gun: Maverik, and Hudson can be seen in the upcoming Knives Out sequel.

Powell tells Hudson that he sensed her character Birdie in Glass Onion might have been informed by some of her personal relationships. “Knowing you as long as I’ve known you, you’re surrounded by some of the most interesting people ever. Every time I’ve come to your house, or your family ranch, there’s always interesting, eccentric people walking around.”

Hudson confirms that there were inspirations that she took from people she knows personally. In terms of the Tom Cruise film Top Gun: Maverick, Powell says he searched deep for his character in Maverick, who he was worried would be too unlikeable but that Cruise encouraged him to lean in all the way and not hold back. Hudson says that’s what made it work for her. “You’re the guy who everyone roots for because everyone loves you so much. So it was really fun for me to see you play something that was like, “He’s really handsome, but I want to like him more.”

Hudson’s Glass Onion, A Knives Out Mystery, will be released globally on Netflix on December 23rd. Powell’s film, Devotion, about the first black U.S. Navy aviator, is currently in theaters.

Hudson’s next project is A Little White Lie with Michael Shannon (The Iceman) and Zach Braff (Obi-Wan Kenobi), set to release in March 2023.

“Coming from the family that I come from, my parents’ concern was that I didn’t understand the peaks and the valleys of what this business really is. That moment for them was like, “Oh, she’s going to be OK.” Because I felt grounded.”
