After years spent in development hell, the long-gestating live-action adaptation of God of War may have finally found its home. Deadline reports that Prime Video is currently in negotiations for a live-action series based on the popular action-adventure video games. The project comes from The Expanse creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, in collaboration with The Wheel of Time executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins, as well as Sony Pictures TV and PlayStation Productions.

The God of War video game series consists of seven titles across four different Sony consoles, first launching with the original God of War on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. It follows ex-Spartan warrior Kratos on his journey to exact revenge on the Greek God of War Ares after he killed his own loved ones under the deity’s influence. After becoming the God of War himself, Kratos spends his days looking for a way to change his fate. The eighth game, God of War: Ragnarok, will be released in 2022 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The God of War Adaptation Has Been a Long Time Coming

Fans have been wanting a God of War adaptation for years, and though there had been rumblings and rumors to come out at various points, the project never seemed to make traction. Last year, the New York Times reported that there were no plans in place to develop the game as a movie or TV series to coincide with the upcoming video game release. Perhaps the news of other major video game franchises getting adaptations sparked renewed interest at Sony in finding a home for the long-gestating God of War adaptation.

“I’ve always been a fan of God of War. I think the latest game was just so beautiful and phenomenal,” Pacific Rim: Uprising helmer Steven S. DeKnight previously said in 2018 of his own hope to do the adaptation. “I would love to tackle a God of War movie or I would love to see somebody put that up on the big screen. Somebody asked me, ‘Well, who would you have to have Kratos?’ And immediately for me: Dave Bautista would be the man. I think he can do anything. You can do drama, real emotion, humor, action. What would I like to see from a movie like that? A bit of a tricky question because there hasn’t really been 100% success of translating a video game to a movie. It’s a very, very tricky process.”
