It was revealed earlier this month that the sequel to Godzilla vs Kong has started filming in Australia and now some more details about the storyline of the new addition to the Monsterverse has been revealed. According to a press release by the Australian Government regarding the movie shooting in the country, some potential spoilers for the upcoming 2024 release have been revealed that suggest this time around the movie will be more Kong-centric and will see the giant ape becoming a hero in the franchise rather than just wanted to destroy everything in sight.
While a number of attempted shared universe franchises have fallen apart pretty quickly, despite something of a shaky start the Monsterverse had become of the guaranteed hit makers when new releases hit theaters. After the release of Godzilla in 2014, Kong: Skull Island set up the first possibility of a meeting between the two behemoths, and after Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the smack down everyone wanted to see finally arrived in 2021 when Godzilla vs Kong managed to become one of the first hit movies of the Covid pandemic when it was released on HBO Max.

Now, along with an Apple TV series starring Kurt and Wyatt Russell, Godzilla vs Kong 2 will further expand the Monsterverse and once again bring everyone’s favorite kaiju back to the big screen for more monster madness. Godzilla vs Kong Sequel Continues The Monsterverse Story

The arrival of Godzilla vs Kong proved that sometimes all anyone wants to see is two giant creatures slamming seven bells out of each other and taking out a few buildings in the process. With director Adam Wingard returning for the new movie, and the new details suggesting a lot more creatures turning up for the titular monsters to spar with, then it certainly seems like fans are going to be getting more of the same this time around.
“The fifth film in the Monsterverse franchise will see Kong defend the Earth from the unusual and dangerous creatures that threaten his new home.”
Wingard previously discussed his hopes for the franchise to Entertainment Weekly, saying:
Of course this time around, the action will be seen on the big screen and that could make a big difference to the impact of the movie, especially when Apple TV+ will also be releasing their linked show. While many still believed that the spectacle of Godzilla vs Kong should have been delayed until a time when it could have been released in theaters, there is every chance that the 2021 hit could see some kind of theatrical re-release prior to the new movie’s arrival.
“I think Godzilla vs. Kong is the first time that we’ve really truly been able to have full sequences where the film leaves the humans and stays with the monsters, just like any other character. That’s a big breakthrough VFX-wise and even story-wise. If there’s another MonsterVerse movie, in my opinion, it should be the first full-on monster film. I would say, 30 percent humans, the rest monsters, basically flipping the formula of what a lot of these movies generally are. I think people are ready for it.”
