This will be the third time that Godzilla, King Kong, and the rest of the monsters in the MonsterVerse have decided to clash in Australia, with Godzilla vs Kong filmed on the Gold Coast back in 2019, with prior installment in the franchise Kong: Skull Island filming there in 2016. The latest production is expected to bring all manner of employment opportunities to the region, as well as inject more than A$119 million ($88 million) into the economy.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is Expected to Delve Deeper into the Hollow Earth
Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Entertainment
Directed by Adam Wingard and starring an ensemble cast which includes Alexander Skarsgård as Nathan Lind, a geologist who works closely with Kong, and Millie Bobby Brown, who reprises her role as Madison Russell from previous MonsterVerse installment Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla Vs. Kong finds the two legendary beasts colliding in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
Kong and his protectors must undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young, orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans-instigated by unseen forces-is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.
While director Adam Wingard has not yet been confirmed to be returning for the sequel, the filmmaker has previously hinted that Godzilla vs. Kong 2: Gods and Kongs would further explore the “Hollow Earth” aspect of the MonsterVerse lore.
“I would absolutely love to continue. The clear starting point we teed up, exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there,” he explained. “This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. If I have the opportunity, I know what I will do. It’s up to Warner Bros and Legendary if they have an appetite.”
Godzilla vs. Kong was theatrically released in the United States on March 31, where it was also released on HBO Max simultaneously. The movie was met positively by both critics and audiences alike, with many excited to see where the franchise will take the legendary monsters next.
