After being reported earlier this month that a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong was set to begin production in Australia later this year, it looks like the first indication of what could be coming from the second meeting of the two giants has already been teased by the working title of the movie: Son of Kong. While Godzilla’s previous Hollywood iteration failed to ignite the box office or get critics and audiences on side, the latest run of movies that began in 2014 has proved to be a huge box office success, which in turn led to the eventual Monsterverse mash-up of Godzilla vs Kong. While that movie ended up being released at the height of the Covid pandemic, it made a good run at the box office, was a huge hit for HBO Max and also became one of the most pirated movies of 2021, suggesting that a sequel was inevitable.

While a sequel was always assumed, there were no teases or post-credit scenes to make it a certainty at the time Godzilla vs. Kong released, but it didn’t take too long for Warner Bros. to make a decision about the future of the franchise. Although the film is definitely in development, and aiming to begin shooting in just a few months, there is no actual confirmation that the movie will feature both Godzilla and Kong, as it is being called simply a “new Monsterverse movie," and with the Son of Kong working title, there could be a disappointment coming for those expecting another monster smackdown between the two icons.
Production Weekly reported that the sequel’s working title will be Son of Kong, prompting a lot of speculation about whether the film will focus on both giant monsters, or will be a Kong movie following his return to the Hollow Earth. While Warner Bros. don’t seem to be in any rush to clarify things, it may be a while before we find out the truth about the Monsterverse sequel.
Son of Kong Will Not Be a Remake of the Original 30s Movie

While Son of Kong was released in 1933, just nine months after the release of the original King Kong movie, the idea that this new release could take any of its plot from that film is a non-starter as they have already covered much of it in Kong: Skull Island in terms of a younger Kong protecting the humans who invade his island. Additionally, the Monsterverse has not actually included the original King Kong story, which ended with the great ape dying in New York City, and which Son of Kong followed on from.
Of course, there has already been a suggestion that Godzilla will be getting his own Monsterverse TV series at Apple TV+, which may indicate why a movie would concentrate on Kong. How this will all transpire, and who, if anyone, from the Monsterverse so far will be returning for this latest adventure is something that will have to be speculated on for a little while yet until Warner Bros. decide to share their plans for the next step of the Godzilla/Kong universe.
