Madman Films has just released the trailer for the thriller, Gold, starring Zac Efron and Anthony Hayes. When do you let go of the dream of having everything you’ve ever wanted? What are you willing to wager? Are you ready to put your life on the line? The Gold trailer explores these questions.

The official synopsis reads: “When two drifters (Zac Efron and Anthony Hayes) travelling across a deserted wasteland stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. The discovery soon becomes problematic when they realize a large part of the nugget is buried underground. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate the gold, with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other man remains and must endure the harsh desert elements while battling suspicion he has been abandoned to his own fate Two-way radios keep them in contact, and with hours and eventually days of dead airtime in between each communication the stranded man begins to run out of supplies. Water is scarce, food even more so. His plans to protect the gold are interrupted by two strangers who may change the course of the men’s plans. Set in an unforgiving landscape, Gold is a film about what motivates greed and the lengths people will go to in order to secure themselves.”

Zac Efron relocated to Austailia where Gold was filmed during lockdown, and he continued to create his Emmy-winning documentary series Down to Earth with Zac Efron. Netflix decribes the series as “Zac Efron goes ‘Green’ as he travels the world in search of the secrets to good health, long life, and a higher level of eco-consciousness. But, with a considerable dose of thrill-seeking and… extreme adventures. Part Travelogue, Part Eco-Warrior Series, Down to Earth with Zac Efron is a journey of deep self and cultural awareness as the star explores how the world lives, eats, prays, plays and in some cases struggles to survive.” Season 2 has already begun production.

Efron proclaims, “I do want to stand for something in life. We’re travelling around the world to find some new perspectives on some very old problems. Food, water and energy are all the main staples for modern life. We’re going to see some top eco innovators to see how change is an inside job. And we’re going to be eating really, really well. We need to start rethinking how we consume everything, from our food to our power. Change has to start somewhere. Maybe it’s about time we all changed. It’s time to get down to earth.”

Watch Gold in Australian cinemas January 13, with a wider release to follow.
