Grown-ish Season 4 Recap

     Freeform

The series first premiered on January 3rd, 2018. It built a fan following pretty quickly. Season 4 aired its first episode on July 8th, 2021. The season starts with Zoey and her gang heading to Mexico before senior year for a summer getaway. It’s filled with new hookups, relationship drama, and even a wedding. After years of back and forth, Zoey is finally with Aaron (Trevor Jackson). They run off to a little Mexican chapel to get married and seemingly consummate their vows on the beach. As a new day dawns, they realize that eloping was a big mistake. They decided to get a divorce, but apparently, their marriage wasn’t legal since they didn’t have a license. So Ana (Francia Raisa) and Javi (Henri Esteve) break up due to lies and trust issues. At the end of the first episode, the gang toasts their senior year and bright futures. Vivek (Jordan Buhat) points out that Covid has arrived in the US, but no one takes him seriously.

After a global pandemic stalls the fall semester of their senior year, the gang finally returns to Cal U to make the most of their final semester. Zoey needs to secure an internship to graduate. She has to face Rochelle (Aaron’s Ex, played by Raigan Harris) in the process. Meanwhile, Vivek’s drug dealing offenses catch him, and he gets sentenced to community service. Though he had stellar educational merit, he still gets expelled from college. He is left with no choice but to face his parents. His mother appreciates his honesty, but his father decides to disown him.

The series has consistently shed light on social issues. This season focused on the killing of an unarmed Black man who was shot by the police. The gang marches the streets of LA to fight for racial justice and equality. As the season proceeds, Zoey’s boss uses her idea without giving her any credit. She contempts whether to confront her or not. Luca (Luka Sabbat) decides to call out her boss on social media. Zoey tries to regain control over the cancel culture but fails.

The mid-season finale aired on September 2, 2021. Zoey and Aaron, who were drunk in love when the season premiered, barely speak to each other now. Doug (Diggy Simmons) and Luca throw a Luau party, but everyone enjoys it except Zoey. Luca notices it and, this time, truly apologies to her for calling out her boss and costing her a vital internship. He further explains why he did that as he couldn’t stand someone taking advantage of her. She is annoyed by his reckless behavior but accepts his apology.

Aaron decides to join the party but gets extremely angry when Zoey informs him that she has accepted Luca’s offer to intern with his company. Jazz (Chloe Bailey) is trying to break up with Des (Warren Egypt Franklin) but fails in doing so. However, she later changes her mind and kisses him passionately after seeing Kiela (Daniella Perkins) and Doug together. At the bar, when Luca approaches Aaron, he punches him in the face. Kiela, Luca’s sister, tends to his face while Zoey runs after Aaron. When she rushes home to find him, she finds a bouquet of flowers and a card that reads congratulations. It turns out Aaron managed to convince the dean to give Zoey full credit for both her failed internships. Ana returns home from the man Vivek set her up with. She chooses not to sleep with him but ends up sleeping with Vivek. Ana then tells him, “we will never speak of this again.”

Season 4 has a total of 18 episodes. The finale will air on March 24, 2022. It’s all about graduation day. The Johnson family will be there, and the gang will celebrate their four years together and toast their post-graduation plans.
