James Gunn, the creative mind at the forefront of the rebooted DCU, joked in his usual style that he could bring some of the cast from his day job at Marvel such as Christ Pratt and Zoe Saldaña to his DC gig. Even though it was a joke, the idea has fans excited and speculating. Gunn already brought actor Chukwudi Iwuji from his DC series Peacemaker to be the villain in his Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as The High Evolutionary, so who’s to say that he won’t do the same switching with other projects.
Many actors like J.K. Simmons and Ryan Reynolds have made the superhero-sized jump several times. Even James Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn has appeared in The Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, so it’s pretty likely that we will see some familiar faces in Gunn’s new DCU. Here are the best DC roles we think the Guardians of the Galaxy cast should play.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Pom Klementieff as Black Canary
DC Comics
Pom Klementieff would be great to fulfill the role of Black Canary. One of DC’s earliest superheroines, Dinah Drake is a martial arts master and a mutant with a sonic scream that is powerful enough to bring down Superman. Klementieff would be perfect as Drake, as she was the first leader of the Birds of Prey, a solid mid-tier superhero, and then became the leader of the Justice League. Klementieff proved she could play the smaller hero and bigger hero as Mantis in The Guardians of the Galaxy and would suit the role of Black Canary well.
Dave Bautista as Lobo
Fans probably see Dave Bautista as Bane, and even Bautista wants to play Bane, yet the actor admits the prospect is unlikely with Gunn’s plan of a Young DCU. So, the next best role for Bautista is Lobo. Lobo is a brutal alien bounty hunter with a sick sense of humor. The actor proved as Drax the Destroyer that he has the build and the attitude to play to the character’s physical demands and elements of humor. Even though Bautista also wants to play Lex Luther, the actor more naturally fits Lobo.
Karen Gillan as Poison Ivy
HBO Max
Karen Gillan has proven that she can pull off both beauty and brains, and therefore is the perfect actress to be the famous Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, also known as Poison Ivy. The good doctor turned herself into part-plant in an experiment gone wrong and is a big hit as a part of HBO Max’s Harley Quinn series. With Gillan’s previous performances as Nebula, a tragic and complicated character, fans can rest assured that Gillan will profoundly portray Poison Ivy with the beauty and pain of a rose.
Bradley Cooper as The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
With the announcement of Lanterns, we know both versions of the Green Lantern will appear together. Bradley Cooper could fill the role of the older Green Lantern, who after many years passes on the Power Ring (an alien piece of technology that grants him his power) to John Stewart, who becomes the new Green Lantern. Cooper is able to convey wit and charisma, even through the animated Rocket, and can certainly bring a level of gravitas as the mentor of a younger Green Lantern.
Michael Rooker as Jonah Hex
Michael Rooker as Jonah Hex is a no-brainer, as his performance as the alien gang leader Yondu proves he can be an intimidating, wild crook and deep anti-hero. Hex was born in the 1800s, raised in a native Indian tribe, fought in the American Civil War, had his face horribly disfigured by his adopted brother, and then was transported into the 21st century. His history is muddled, but Hex is an expert gunslinger, and Rooker had the attitude and skills for this ruthless cowboy.
Zoe Saldaña as Hawkgirl
Many fans would love to see Zoe Saldaña jump the MCU ship for the DCU vessel, and many say it would be even better to see her fly across as Hawkgirl. The history of Kendra Saunders is unclear, as some say she equips artificial wings made of Nth metal to grant her flight, or she may come from another planet. Though Saunders is often the wife of Hawkman, Saldaña has proved as Gamora that she can play the romantic interest well yet fiercely remain her own hero.
Chris Pratt as Booster Gold
Booster Gold is the perfect superhero fit for all of Chris Pratt’s natural talents, especially the goofy part. Michael Jon Carter is a loser who comes from the 25th century using advanced technology to become rich as a superhero of today but has no clue how to do that. Pratt has proved that he can pull off Carter’s cocky, brash, and ridiculous attitude with ease, and Pratt has also proved he can bring the goofiness and heroism of the character just like he did Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. Booster Gold is actually getting a series on HBO Max, so here’s to hoping we see Chris Pratt in the world of superheroes again.
Even though these are the best and most likely roles for our favorite Marvel misfits to play in the DC universe, now that Gunn has finally revealed the first ten projects of the new DCU, there are many other roles they could fill — and it’s likely we’ll see them on the other side soon.
