Netflix is dropping a new documentary series, and unlike many of its beloved true-crime documentaries, this one has four paws and a seemingly lighter note. Gunther’s Millions investigates the world’s richest dog, Gunther IV. Gunther made headlines previously when the dog sold his mansion, formerly owned by Madonna, for $29 million. This lucky German shepherd has an estate of over 400 million dollars and plenty of humans trained for his every whim.

Don’t be fooled by the puppy eyes; Gunther sits in the middle of a plethora of drama, and it’s not all of the canine variety. From the looks of the trailer, Gunther is more than spoiled. A pooch surrounded by models, owning his own private jet and yacht, and multiple properties in Italy is no walk in the dog park, but who are the humans behind his lavish lifestyle?

The four-part investigative documentary series explores the relationships intertwined around the fortune, the dog, and the possessions. And, like many good documentaries, the word ‘cult’ is already thrown around in the trailer. According to People’s report on the series, Aurelien Leturgie, an executive producer on Gunther’s Millions, said, “We’re beyond excited for this trailer to be out in the world, so everyone can enjoy the many twists and turns of the Gunther story! Making this documentary series has been a real roller coaster ride of revelations and deception, and we never could imagine where the story was going to take us.” Check out the full trailer below.

How Did Gunther IV Amass His $400 Million Fortune?

     Netflix

A German Countess, Karlotta Leibenstein, had no children or close relatives. That being so, she willed her entire $80 million fortune to her German Shepherd when she died in 1992. This lucky pup was Gunther III, Gunther IV’s grandfather, and the dog that would begin the royally rich line of Gunther pooches. At least, that’s how the story goes.

The trailer hints that there may be more behind the fortune, “Is the Countess real?,” says one interviewee. Another interviewee, one of the ‘beautiful people’ paid to live in Gunther’s mansion and apparently follow ‘commandments,’ says, “It got a little bit twisted,” she continues, “we were being watched 24/7.” Creepy, right?

If Tiger King is any indication, Netflix certainly has a track record of finding the twisted stories behind a seemingly innocent, four-legged friend. But, for now, viewers will have to be content with their unanswered questions and tune in to Netflix on Feb. 1 to get to the bottom of the story.
