Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is getting a television spin-off. Miramax has confirmed the series development, with Ritchie returning as an executive producer and co-writer. The series was first reported to be in negotiation at Netflix last month. The Gentlemen received its US release in early 2020, one of the few films to get a theatrical run just before the pandemic. The enthralling gangster drama set in England starred an ensemble including Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Michelle Dockery, Henry Golding, Jeremy Strong, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant. The film was met with decent reviews from critics and turned a profitable box-office gross of $115 Million against a budget of $22 Million.

Though many didn’t watch the film in theaters, the film gained mass popularity on Netflix, convincing the streaming platform to greenlit a spin-off series based on the film. The series, titled after the movie itself, will stream on Netflix. According to Deadline, Ritchie, director, and writer of the film, will also write the series with Matthew Read. Ritchie is also set to direct the pilot and the following episode of the series. Joining the co-writers as executive producers are Marn Davies, Marc Helwig, Bill Block, Ivan Atkinson, and Will Gould.

The series will feature a new cast with an original story that will act as a second chapter to the events unraveled in the film. There is no confirmation whether any member of the film’s cast will return to reprise their respective roles.

While confirming the series’ development, Miramax and Netflix confirmed that Theo James will lead the new cast, playing a new character that wasn’t introduced in the film. James will play a character named Eddie Halstead, the new owner of a large estate he got in inheritance, only to find later that the land has connections to Mickey Pearson’s marijuana empire. McConaughey played Mickey Pearson in The Gentlemen movie.

Theo James is known for his work in the Divergent Series and most recently for his starring roles in HBO Max’s Time Traveler’s Wife and the second season of The White Lotus. The production of the Netflix series will begin this month in association with Miramax TV. The series will be set in London.

The Gentlemen was an exciting film filled with cunning twists and turns that made it a wholesome experience. McConaughey’s and Hunnam’s performances stood out to further make the movie worthwhile. We don’t know who will join Theo James in the series, while the actor will have a big responsibility to carry forward as The Gentlemen has its own fans who are familiar with Ritchie’s ostentatious filmmaking style.

In The Gentlemen, Mickey Pearson attempts to sell his empire to an American billionaire, which sets a chain of bloody events involving cunning plots, deadly schemes, bribery, backstabbing, and blackmailing, colliding with each other to form a bold and entertaining drama.

There isn’t a release date for the series yet. But till then, you can familiarize yourself with The Gentlemen, which is available to stream on Netflix.
