Over the last few years, the name Gwendoline Christie has been appearing in many popular film and TV franchises. The model-turned-actress appeared in big performances like the Star Wars franchise, Game of Thrones, and even the new Addams Family spinoff series, Wednesday. Christie’s early career included supporting roles in films like Welcome to Marwen and in multiple films of the Star Wars franchise where she played Phasma. Though these films were not regarded as the best Star Wars movies, her villainous battle character jump-started a theme that landed her similar roles. Christie played Brienne of Tarth, a fierce warrior who is loyal and trusting, in the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. On the opposite end, she finds herself as the villain Lucifer in the Netflix series, The Sandman.

In yet another reversal of roles, Christie also shows her feminine side as Larissa Weems in the new series, Wednesday. In an interview with EW, Christie talked about her character and love for Ortega, who played the titular character of Wednesday. Christie’s latest news comes with her joining season 2 of Severance, the hit AppleTV series starring Adam Scott. While we anxiously await more from the emerging actress, let’s take a look at her best movies and TV shows to date.

5 Welcome to Marwen

     Universal Pictures

Christie is no stranger to supporting roles. Though she plays a side character in Steve Carell’s biography film, Welcome to Marwen, her performance as Anna was memorable as she appeared as two characters. In the film, Anna is the caretaker of Mark, who lives alone and is suffering from PTSD after he was brutally attacked by a group of neo-Nazis who made fun of Mark for wearing women’s shoes. Once a month, Anna, the human, checks in on Mark. She knows about his village of Marwen and that one of the dolls is based on her. Anna, the doll version, is a Soviet member of doll-Mark’s (Hogie) team. She, along with the rest of the team, helps Hogie save Nicol from the Nazis and the witch Deja. In real life, the dolls help Mark overcome her anxiety and break his addiction to his pills.

4 Star Wars Franchise

     Lucasfilm

In multiple performances within the Star Wars franchise, Christie played Captain Phasma. These performances include appearances in the Star Wars Resistance TV series (3 episodes), Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, and two Star Wars video games. Phasma is the commander of the First Order’s legions of stormtroopers. Similar to many of her characters, Phasma is a tough veteran commander who worked her way up the ranks due to her fierce warrior skills in battle and as a leader. Growing up in poverty and having to defend herself helped shape her capabilities as a leader and warrior. When Christie was cast as Phasma, it marked her as the first leading woman villain in the franchise.

3 The Sandman - Lucifer Morningstar

     Warner Bros. Television and Netflix

Though she only appeared in two episodes of the hit Netflix series, The Sandman, Christie’s portrayal of Lucifer Morningstar was a memorable performance for the actress. The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, the personification of dreams sets out on a quest to claim his lost objects of power. The 2022 series, whose second season was just greenlit, is based on Neil Gaiman’s comic series of the same name. In episode four, we get to see Christie as Lucifer, the singular ruler of Hell. She faces off with Dream in a metaphysical battle of wits as opposed to a physical battle, making Christie’s portrayal as Lucifer all the more menacing. Dream is victorious leaving Lucifer vowing to destroy the Sandman.

2 Wednesday

     Netflix

In what she regards as her only role where she felt beautiful on-screen, Christie played Principal Larissa Weems in Tim Burton’s Addams family spinoff series, Wednesday. In the spinoff series, Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, goes to Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to control and understand her psychic ability. At Nevermore is where she meets Christie’s Larissa Weems who starts off at odds with Wednesday before ultimately helping her learn the truth behind Thornhill (Christine Ricci). Although her character perishes, her relationship with Wednesday will stay with the young girl forever.

1 Game of Thrones

     HBO

It’s no surprise that Christie’s best role comes from her role as Brienne of Tarth in the multiple seasons of Game of Thrones. The fierce warrior-turned-knight spent her time in the show protecting the Stark girls and using her brute force in many epic battles and combat fighting. She was even able to experience a few moments of romance with Jaime Lannister, a relationship that took multiple seasons for the pair to finally act on their feelings. Brienne was fiercely loyal and tried her best to uphold the oaths she swore to people. Her friendship with Podrick helped show Brienne’s ability to soften and become friendly.
