Halle Bailey is ready for you to join her under the sea.
Though the star, who rose to fame as part of a singing duo with older sister Chloe, was initially nervous about taking on the titular role in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, Bailey told E! News that she no longer feels any pressure over playing Ariel.
“I don’t feel pressure anymore. I think that before I started filming, I did feel some nerves naturally because the film is important to so many people,” she said of playing the Disney Princess.
While there was some backlash online over Bailey’s casting, the 22-year-old was unfazed by the keyboard critics and says she gave her performance her all—with the unwavering support of her friends and family.

The “Do It” singer also told E! that while she was “super honored” to be playing the Disney Princess, the most rewarding part of the entire experience has been seeing young Black and Brown girls reacting to her Ariel’s rendition of “Part of Your World.”
“It just makes me cry,” Bailey said, sharing that she would often play mermaids in the backyard pool with sister Chloe as kids. The singer and actress also added that she was looking forward to being the Black girl representation that was sorely lacking during her own childhood.
“The fact that all these little Black and Brown babies are going to be able to feel like they’re being represented is really special to me. I know that if I had that when I was younger, it would have changed a whole lot for me and my perspective on who I am as an individual.”
But overall, Bailey says she hopes that her Little Mermaid remake will have a little something that everyone can enjoy.
“I’m just really grateful to kind of be in this position and I just hope everybody really enjoys the film.”
