This month saw the release of Halloween Ends, the final chapter of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy. After Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode for the 2018 film, she was back for last year’s Halloween Kills ahead of her final hurrah in Halloween Ends. Given that he knew he would be taking some unexpected turns with the film, Green had also known to expect a fair amount of backlash, so much so that he had even warned at least one of its stars to expect some fan complaints.
As we know now, Halloween Ends was not exactly met with open arms upon its released. It was met with negative reviews and heavy criticism from fans on social media. At the same time, the film has its defenders with other Halloween fans praising the sequel along with Green for doing something bold. As for how it all makes Green feel, the director says in a new interview with MovieMaker that everyone will have their own opinions, so what he found was best was to focus on finish telling the story he sought out to tell in a way that personally makes him feel satisfied.

Green may have anticipated that there would be some backlash, though he may not have foreseen the film getting a petition started for him to reshoot the entire movie. Ahead of production, however, he garnered the blessing of John Carpenter. While Green was taking some unexpected turns with the movie, Carpenter was able to respect that as someone who wanted the franchise to venture into new territory with Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
In the same interview, Green also expresses his own appreciation for Halloween III, explaining why he has featured Easter eggs referencing that film in his Halloween movies. He also suggests that Halloween III would be a good movie to get rebooted by another filmmaker. As for Green, however, his focus will next be on The Exorcist as he is preparing to start work on a legacy sequel that brings back original star Ellen Burstyn.
Halloween Ends is playing in theaters and on Peacock.
