The first time we see Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, he is accompanied by a huge orchestral arrangement of the now iconic Hans Zimmer Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Now the composer has explained exactly why that piece of music is so epic despite Jack’s less than impressive entrance – it’s all in his head.
When it comes to film score composers, there are certain names that stand above all others for their body of work. Among that number is Hans Zimmer, the mastermind behind the scores of movies such as Gladiator, The Dark Knight The Lion King and Dune, the latter two of which earned him Academy Awards for Best Original Score.

Among Zimmer’s most instantly recognizable pieces is the theme music from Pirates of the Caribbean. In an interview for 60 Minutes, Zimmer discussed his work on the Pirates movies, and explained exactly why such a grand piece accompanies the first appearance of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow as he docks on his sinking ship. Zimmer said:
“The music is really big. He’s in a little row boat with a little sail and you hear this huge orchestra because that’s the music he hears in his head because he’s the greatest pirate that has ever lived in his imagination.”
Will Jack Sparrow or the Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise Ever Sail Again?

According to reports there is a possibility of both happening sometime in the future. Of course, the return of Johnny Depp is still very much a much rumored-maybe, but it would seemingly take a lot for it to happen. During Depp’s very public trial with Amber Heard, the actor made it clear that he had no interest in returning to the Disney-owned franchise, but that seems like a very never say never comment if ever there was one. The question of whether it will now happen is what everyone wants to know, but according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, there are two different Pirates movies in contention, one of which would see Margot Robbie taking over the franchise lead. Bruckheimer previously said:
Depp himself has made no comment on whether he would now consider a return as Jack Sparrow on the big screen, but that doesn’t mean he has completely left the character behind. Towards the end of last year, Depp appeared in a video message arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation in full Jack Sparrow costume. Shared on the YouTube channel of fan Kori, Depp gives it his all as the character that continues to be loved by many.
“I think that that [Margot Robbie] script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”
What the future holds for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will most likely be revealed soon, but one thing for certain is that Hans Zimmer will likely be waiting in the wings to return with another epic piece of scoring.
