Hollywood legend Harrison Ford will soon join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking over as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross following the death of William Hurt. Ford’s addition to the hugely popular comic book movie franchise came as a major surprise when it was confirmed earlier this year, and the Star Wars and Indiana Jones star has now explained why he wants to add his name to the Marvel roster.
Expected to debut as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: New World Order, which is due for release on 3 May 2024, Ford will then join the likes of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) in Thunderbolts, with Thaddeus Ross taking charge of this rag-tag team of superheroes and villains.
“Hey, look, I’ve done a lot of things. I now want to do some of the things I haven’t done.”

But what is it that joining the MCU will enable Ford to do that he has not done before? He’s definitely ordered people around before. He’s starred in huge tentpole projects before. Could he be referring to starring in a comic book movie? Or is it possible that Ford’s Thaddeus Ross will indeed transform into the Red Hulk in Thunderbolts, with the actor performing a motion capture performance for the first time?
Asked by The Playlist whether that is the case, Ford kept his cards close to his chest, smiling and making a “zipped-lips” gesture. Certainly, the idea of Harrison Ford transforming in the Red Hulk is a hugely exciting one. But we’ll just have to wait and see if such Marvel dreams do come true.
Thunderbolts Will Land in Theaters in 2024
Marvel Studios
While details of Thunderbolts remain under wraps at present, a piece of artwork from D23 revealed who will make up the titular team. A team that could be sent in to do battle with Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk. Maybe.
Black Widow star David Harbour will reprise the role of Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian in the MCU outing, with the actor describing the movie as a mixture of a drama and comedy. “I think they’re all difficult people who all have many weaknesses,” he explained. “As you may know, as I certainly do, when you put a bunch of people with various certain weaknesses together, there’s often drama and comedy.”
Directed by Jake Schreier, filming on Thunderbolts is expected to begin early next year before being released on July 26, 2024. Thunderbolts will make up part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic, which will begin with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Scheduled for release on February 17, 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania finds Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne, along with Hope’s parents Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne and Lang’s daughter Cassie, sucked into the Quantum Realm and pit against Kang the Conqueror.
The rest of the phase includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023 and The Marvels on July 28, 2023, as well as the MCU Blade reboot.
