“You attack my family, it’s gonna be the last thing you ever do,” growls Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch, in the latest trailer for the upcoming Yellowstone prequel series, 1923. Led by Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, 1923 follows an earlier generation of the Dutton family as they face hardships and fight for each other. Picking up a century before the events of the hugely popular Yellowstone, 1923 is the next installment of the Dutton family origin story. The prequel will introduce a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren), following a generation of the Dutton family in 1923. The series will pick up with the family during a time of various hardships, including Western Expansion, pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Each of these plagues the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.

Created by Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan, 1923 stars Brandon Sklenar (The Offer), Darren Mann (Animal Kingdom), Michelle Randolph (A Snow White Christmas), James Badge Dale (Hightown), Marley Shelton (Scream), Brian Geraghty (Big Sky), Aminah Nieves (Blueberry), Julia Schlaepfer (The Politician) and Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Peacemaker), Sebastian Roché (The Originals), and Timothy Dalton (Hot Fuzz, Toy Story 4) alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

“He’s the silverback,” Ford said of his character. “He’s responsible for that branch of the family. These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing really complicated circumstances.”

“You need someone who is capable of making decisions, and hopefully making the right decisions, but at least making a decision and going with it—in other words, a leader,” adds Helen Mirren. “That’s what has propelled them into this position of running the ranch, running the family, being the linchpin around whom, at this moment in time, the family revolves.”

Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Recently Rejected ‘Anti-Woke’ Accusations

The main Yellowstone series first began in 2018, and follows Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, the head of the Dutton family and owner of the largest ranch in Montana, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The series is currently in its fifth season and while the show got off to a rocky start, subsequent outings have been met with critical acclaim, large viewership figures, and various award nominations.

The show, however, has been criticized by some for pushing conservative, ‘anti-woke,’ views. An accusation that creator and writer Taylor Sheridan has recently rejected. “They refer to it as ‘the conservative show’ or ‘the Republican show’ or ‘the red-state Game of Thrones.’ And I just sit back laughing,” Sheridan said earlier this month. “I’m like, ‘Really?’ The show’s talking about the displacement of Native Americans and the way Native American women were treated and about corporate greed and the gentrification of the West, and land-grabbing. That’s a red-state show?”

1923 is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2022, on Paramount+. The Yellowstone prequel series has already been renewed for season 2, with 1923 set to last for two seasons as eight episodes each.
