Harry Styles is perhaps the biggest star in the world right now.
With two highly-anticipated movies on the way, a new album, and a 15-show residency at Madison Square Garden, Styles’ fame has only been on the rise since his One Direction days.
Now, the former boy band heartthrob turned solo artist and actor sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the repercussions of such bright stardom.
One thing that has always been a topic of conversation, he says, is his sexuality. The flamboyant and gender-bending Styles has often been accused of queerbaiting—that is, marketing himself as being LGBTQ+ without actually identifying as a member of the queer community himself. These accusations have only increased since news broke that Styles would be playing a closeted gay policeman in 1950s Britain in the upcoming drama My Policeman.

Historically preferring to keep the specifics of his sexual orientation under wraps, the Dunkirk actor admitted that everyone goes through their own process of figuring out their sexuality—including himself—while discussing his role in My Policeman.
“I think everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it,” Styles told Rolling Stone, gracing the front of this month’s issue as the first-ever global cover star.
The star criticized assumptions made by fans and press about his love life, saying, “Sometimes people say, ‘you’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone.”
He added, “If someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn’t mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship or something.”

Another consequence of such intense fame, especially in the day and age of social media, is a rabid, relentless fanbase.
Despite attempts to keep a low profile regarding romantic relationships, Styles has been quite publicly in a relationship with Olivia Wilde since starring in the Wilde-directed Don’t Worry Darling.
And not everyone is happy about that.
