Based on a book series of the same name, Perry Mason is an HBO drama show that premiered in June 2020. This series was based on the classic Erle Stanley Gardner character created by Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones. The show is the second to use Gardner’s detective fiction as its inspiration. Among the first one-hour shows on the air, Perry Mason made waves in 1957. Aside from the talent of its cast and creators, HBO’s remake has also been greatly enhanced by director Tim Van Patten. His portrayal of 1930s Los Angeles’ cosmopolitan style was largely responsible for the show’s popularity.
The first season was renewed for a second installment just five episodes after its premiere. Also in January 2022, HBO announced several upcoming cast members, including Sean Astin (Stranger Things), Tommy Dewey (Casual), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), and Jen Tullock (Before You Know It). In addition to these changes, Michael Begler and Jack Amiel will take over as showrunners for Season 2. HBO’s popular crime show will return to its broadcast schedule in March, as revealed in an official teaser. The titular investigator, played by Matthew Rhys, will be back in action. In the wake of a critically acclaimed first season that resulted in four Emmy nominations, there is high anticipation for the series return.

Warner Bros. Television Distribution
The plot of Perry Mason takes place during the early 1930s, during the Great Depression. As Mason works through the legal system of Los Angeles, one of the few places that remained prosperous despite the Depression, he deals with his trauma from the Great War and his recent divorce. While dealing with these disturbing events, Mason temporarily transitions from criminal justice to civil court. Taking place in 1933 with Mason entangled in a new murder case following the controversial Dodson investigation, Season 2 features Mason involved in a different crime story.
Matt Rhys recently gave an insight into what to expect from the new installment of the show in an interview with Esquire.
Along with Rhys, Diarra Kilpatrick, who plays Clara Drake, is one of many returning cast members. This includes Chris Chalk, Eric Lange, Justin Kirk, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, and Robert Patrick. Perry Mason will return to HBO Max next year, premiering on March 6, 2023.
“I think you find him treading water—but I think it’s beyond that. He’s slightly just trying to keep his head and figure out what it is he wants in his life.”
