Spoiler Warning: Barry Season 3

The third season of Barry came to a shocking conclusion in its season finale. While viewers had to wait three years after the second season of Barry ended to catch the third season, it was worth the wait.

Season three of Barry begins with Barry (Bill Hader) continuing to be a hit-man through the dark web while also auditioning for acting roles and living with his girlfriend, Sally (Sarah Goldberg), who has, it seems, successfully caught her break in the entertainment industry by writing and starring in the semi-autobiographical television show, Joplin.

Meanwhile, his former boss, Fuches (Stephen Root), hides in Chechnya to avoid Barry’s wrath. However, he returns to Los Angeles and plots his revenge on Barry by going to the relatives of Barry’s victims and leading the way for them to get their revenge, with each attempt leading to consequences on their part and Barry continuing to live. Until he reaches Janice’s father, Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom), a former fighter pilot who was shot down and caught but casually mentions getting into his interrogator’s head, who then committed suicide. FBI agent Albert (James Hiroyuki Liao), a former Marine who served with Barry, also gets involved with the murder cases.

Additionally, Barry’s acting teacher Cousineau now knows the secret from Fuches that he killed his girlfriend Janice (Paula Newsome) and had been lying to his face this whole time. When he attempts revenge, Barry ultimately threatens Cousineau’s son and grandson while promising to get his acting career back on track in exchange for not turning him in to the authorities.

All of Barry’s actions throughout the season and his pasts actions from the previous season culminate in the shocking conclusion in the season finale that viewers did not expect; Barry gets ambushed by police and taken into custody.

Barry has been renewed for a fourth season on HBO, with Hader expected to direct all the episodes. Now that season three has ended, here’s what we hope to see in season four.

Where We Left Off

The season starts with Barry going to every casting director in Los Angeles to get Cousineau work, but they refuse because of his reputation in the industry. While Sally is in the middle of production of Joplin, a series about her being in an abusive relationship, Barry attempts to get her to cast Cousineau. When she refuses, he yells at her in front of her coworkers, leading them to tell her that she cannot be with someone like that and eventually leave him. But with Barry’s help, Cousineau revives his career and gains his reputation back.

The final episode leads to the conclusion of all of Barry’s actions. We see Fuches in custody after Moss turns him in to the authorities in connection with Janice’s death, where he reveals to FBI agent Albert that he is Barry’s handler for contract hit-man work. Sally’s show Joplin is canceled. She finds out her assistant used her show idea to create her own version. Sally aggressively confronts her assistant, much like how Barry confronted her at the beginning of the series. This leads to Sally’s entertainment career being over while also revealing that she is going down Barry’s path. Cousineau is interrogated by Moss about Barry and Janice.

Towards the last few moments of the finale, Barry and Sally, on the phone, plan on running away from Los Angeles, but little does he know, she is already at the airport heading back to Joplin. Barry gets a call from Moss wanting answers after speaking to Cousineau, refuses, and calls Cousineau instead. After arriving at his location, Cousineau has a gun, ready to shoot Moss because he knows everything. Barry decides to take matters into his own hands and enter his residence. As he is about to pull the trigger on Moss, Barry is ambushed by the police and is arrested with the help of Cousineau.

What We Hope to See in Season 4

After season three’s conclusion of Barry, we have more questions now about what will happen to Barry and everyone else who’s been involved with him in season four. First, what is going to happen to Barry? Now that he is in police custody, a lot can happen to him. It would be interesting to see how he does in police interrogation. Will he be able to con his way out towards freedom or face the consequences?

It would also be intriguing to see the aftermath of Cousineau. Since his career is getting back on track, will everything about Barry distract him, or will he be able to move on from him? There’s also a possibility of Cousineau and Barry having another face-to-face. It would give viewers a sense of Barry’s emotional state since he admires Cousineau even though he could care less about Barry.

As for Sally, she is going down Barry’s path of destruction. Since she is heading back to Joplin, we might see her confront her own conflicts that made her run away in the first place.

One thing for sure is all of Barry’s actions have led to the consequences for others.
