That’s a wrap on The Last of Us. In the works at HBO, The Last of Us is a live-action adaptation of the video game of the same name with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles. Craig Mazin, who’s writing and producing the series alongside Neil Druckmann, revealed on Saturday that filming has been officially completed on the show’s freshman season with an announcement post on Twitter.

The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by a contagion capable of mutating humans into bloodthirsty savages. Pascal stars as Joel, a hardened survivor hired to smuggle teenage girl Ellie (Ramsey) across the United States while avoiding deadly mutants and maurauders. Gabriel Luna also stars at Tommy, Joel’s brother, with other cast members including Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Anna Torv, Nick Offerman, Storm Reid, and Nico Parker.

Because The Last of Us had been such a hit with gamers, there had been attempts for years to get an adaptation off the ground before HBO finally made it happen. The series will be the first HBO series to be based on a video game. It comes from Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. Druckmann, who wrote and directed the acclaimed video game, partnered up with Chernobyl creator Mazin to develop the live-action adaptation.

The Last of Us Takes Inspiration From a Video Game

Pedro Pascal has teased that the series will be pretty faithful to its source material. Per Comicbook.com, he recently called the series “harrowing” and noted that it totally has that Last of Us vibe with the TV show “covered in clickers and spores.” As the actor puts it:

Craig Mazin has also previously explained how the goal with the series is to entertain The Last of Us fans in a way that’s different compared to the original video game. While the series takes heavy inspiration from the games, Mazin’s comments also suggest that viewers will be able to appreciate the story in a very different way when they’re able to relax and take it in as opposd to controlling the action every step of the way.

The Last of Us doesn’t have a premiere date set at this time.
