Prepare to go back to Heartbreak High. Deadline reports that the series has just been picked up for a second season at Netflix with production on new episodes set to start soon in Sydney, Australia. The renewal comes after the freshman season launched last month, having since had subscribers stream more than 42 million hours in its first three weeks. This is obviously great news for fans of the show as Netflix can be infamous for axing many of its shows prematurely.

Heartbreak High comes from Fremantle Australia and NewBe. It is a reboot of a TV series of the same name that aired in Australia from 1994 to 1999. The new version is created by Hannah Carroll Chapman and follows the students and faculty of Hartley High School. The series stars Ayesha Madon, James Majoos, Chloe Hayden, Asher Yasbincek, Thomas Weatherall, Will McDonald, Joshua Heuston, Gemma Chua-Tran, Bryn Chapman-Parish, Sherry-Lee Watson, Brodie Townsend, Chika Ikogwe, Scott Major, and Rachel House.

“Don’t worry, we won’t f*** it up,” Netflix’s director of originals in Australia, Que Minh Luu, told The Guardian about rebooting Heartbreak High ahead of its premiere. “It’s not just that Heartbreak High was popular, it’s that it meant something. And for me, being a kid of the 90s, loving the show, I think it was the first time you felt like a show understood you. We wanted to tap into that feeling.”

On where this new series may go compared to the original, Luu added, “It was cool and mature, the tone was really sexy and provocative and kind of aggressive. So what does that translate to in 2022? And from our point of view, things like honesty, diversity, and maturity is base level. I don’t think that is necessarily aspirational for now. I think that’s just par for the course.”

“What we want to do is reflect what it’s like to be a young person today," she said. “We want to do it in a way that is uniquely Australian, and that puts on display that Australian sense of humor, which is self-deprecating and freaking brutal, irreverent and often inappropriate at inappropriate times.”

Heartbreak High Has Scored Well With Critics

Fortunately, people have been loving the new Heartbreak High. The series has garnered a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, pulling in unanimous praise from critics. The audience score is almost just as high, ranking at 90% fresh as well. With such strong reviews coupled with high viewership, it’s easy to see why Netflix wants to bring back this series for another season.
