Frequent collaborator Helena Bonham Carter is firmly in the corner of Johnny Depp months after his defamation trial, feeling that the embattled actor has successfully cleared his name. For years, Depp had been leveled with accusations of domestic abuse which culminated with Heard describing herself as an abuse survivor in a 2018 op-ed written for The Washington Post. The two sued one another for defamation, but the jury heavily sided with Depp, agreeing that Heard’s allegations were maliciously fabricated to derail his career.
In a new interview with The Times, Carter weighed in on the situation with Depp. A longtime friend of Depp’s, the two previously co-starred in seven films together with Depp even serving as godfather to her two children. She’s obviously someone who knows Depp well, not buying into the allegations against him. Of the trial, Carter says that the jury’s decision has vindicated Depp and that his public image has been restored.

Carter then makes the suggestion that Heard put herself up on the pendulum when asked if the jury decision was the result of the “pendulum of #MeToo swinging back.” She seems to insinuate that Heard had simply wanted to be a part of the #MeToo “bandwagon” and saw an opportunity by making herself the “poster girl for it,” no matter what harm this may have brought to her ex-husband.
Johnny Depp Is Getting His Career Back on Track
Things have noticeably gotten better for Depp in the months since the defamation trial. He’s back to getting cast in lead roles, as he’s currently working on the French film Jeanne du Barry which will see him starring as King Louis XV. Depp has also popped up on television with an appearance at the MTV VMAs, more recently showing up for Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show. Depp has also been working on new music and has announced that his band Hollywood Vampires will be going back on tour in 2023.
It’s not the same with Heard, who’s been keeping mostly off the radar. While she’s still set to appear in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was filmed before the trial, Heard is now attached to any other upcoming films. Time will tell what the future holds, but it would seem that getting back to the top of Hollywood with more lucrative movie roles coming her way will be an uphill struggle for Heard. Meanwhile, she has appealed the jury’s decision, going for that final shot of having the judgment thrown out.
