The Hellraiser franchise has always been known for pushing boundaries when it comes to the designs of its Cenobite characters. With a lead creature with a grid of pins hammered into their skull, the level of gut-wrenching details of these demonic characters is already set high, and for Hulu’s new take on Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart that means a new collection of terrifying Cenobites are coming. Director David Bruckner recently spoke to Screen Rant about the movie, and this included a discussion about creating a whole new batch of monsters for the reboot.
“David Bruckner: There’s so much you can do in the Hellraiser world; Cenobites as a concept are just such incredible movie monsters. We really enjoyed focusing on their human qualities and thinking about the human body augmented and how far you can push that in different directions. We tried to give each of them a personality that was a combination of the stories as revealed in their designs, but also what each of the actors brought to them.
One of the great things about doing practical work is that you’re there on the ground. It’s everybody’s having an experience together, and the limitations that you face become things that you pull from, and you use. Just like the way Jamie was fighting the voice in the throat, for some of the other Cenobites’ movement was tricky. We found ways to use that in strange ways, and it’s just a testament to the virtues and the pain of working practically.”

Jamie Clayton Brings A New Pinhead To Life In Hellraiser

Despite many Hellraiser fans still not being able to imagine anyone but Doug Bradley in the role of Pinhead, Jamie Clayton’s complete reinvention of the Hell Priest has been something of a revelation. By not simply finding someone to imitate Bradley’s interpretation of the horror icon, the new Hellraiser has brought something new and fresh to the long stagnant franchise.
For Clayton, it is a role that has come with plenty of pressure, but also has been something that she has loved every minute of. More than anything, she recently spoke about how it feels to be taking over the role made famous by Bradley, who previously praised Clayton’s take on the character. Clayton commented:
“What a thrill. I mean, what an absolute fing thrill. I wanted to do it in my own way, and not do it in an over-the-top way, but it is like an homage, those Easter eggs for the fans. I mean, oh my god, what an absolute fing thrill. The other day he was asked at one of the conventions where he was doing an appearance, and somebody asked him about it. He’s actually a fan of a show I did called Sense8, and gave me his blessing. So, that was really fun for me. That was really sweet.”
Hellraiser comes to Hulu on October 7th, while international release dates are yet to be announced.
