All of the mystery around Henry Cavill’s Superman return is now done, and the actor has been talking openly about his cameo appearance in Black Adam and what it means for the future. One aspect of his new appearance in the cape has raised more questions than many others, and that is the decision to use John Williams’ Superman score rather than that of Hans Zimmer to usher the Man of Steel back into the DCU. Cavill has his own ideas about why it was right to use the classic score in Black Adam’s post-credits scene.
Henry Cavill last officially played Superman in 2017’s Justice League, which the character returned from death to save the world. Now, five long years later and Superman’s future as an integral part of the DCU is once again guaranteed, as he is set to spar with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam across multiple future movies. While seeing the two powerhouses of the DC world was enough for many, there was an additional nostalgic boost given to the scene with the addition of John Williams’ classic Superman score. While speaking to CinemaBlend, Cavill commented:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“John Williams’ theme song is obviously incredibly important to the character. It’s something which resonates with the character and everything time I think anyone in the world hears that, I think a large portion of the world who hears that will recognize it immediately as Superman and feel a certain way about it, and I do think it’s wonderful.”
How Much Does Henry Cavill’s Return Mean for the DCU?
It is clear that the former DCEU has been struggling for some time to find a solid footing, with no real direction or cohesion. With the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, and a central storyline featuring Black Adam and Superman’s incoming face-off, the DCU could be about to find its feet. In the middle of so many changes, Henry Cavill’s Superman return seems like the biggest constant for the franchise, especially with others such as Ben Affleck’s Batman reportedly dropping out of the franchise next year. Cavill is certainly happy with the turn of events, as he recently said of his Black Adam appearance:
While Black Adam’s box office may not have been as epic as the movie itself, this is clearly the start of a new direction for Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Universe and there will be many executive hoping that this time around, it has a long successful run ahead of it.
“It was a very powerful moment for me. I wasn’t too sure how it’s going to feel, whether it’s going to be ‘cool, back in the suit;’ or whether it was going to be something which was very emotionally connective because I put the Man of Steel suit back on. I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit, and it was incredibly important to me to just be standing and enjoying that moment. Yeah, that is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
