Ever since the news broke that Henry Cavill will depart from the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, fans have been left wondering why the actor had made such a seemingly sudden decision. Well, thanks to a report from Redanian Intelligence, Cavill’s decision to leave may have been brewing for some time, with the actor reportedly having issues with the direction of the show since the second season.
The report states that Cavill and the producers “weren’t seeing eye to eye” regarding Geralt and the direction of The Witcher — a franchise that Cavill is a big fan of. The report even claims that the actor was thinking about walking away at the end of season 2, though this simply resulted in a contract renegotiation for season 3.

As the report points out, these disputes surrounding the second season would line up with several interviews during which Cavill asserted his passion for The Witcher source material and the battles he had been facing to keep the adaptation accurate. “The toughest part for me was finding that balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books, and trying to bring that Geralt to the showrunners’ vision,” Cavill said at the time. “It’s about treading a fine line there. It’s the showrunners’ story and so it’s an adaptation. The tricky bit for me was finding Geralt from the books’ place within that and being able to serve both as much as I could.”
We may never know what happened behind the scenes, with recent reports simply saying that “Cavill had made a short-term deal for The Witcher and felt it was time to move on after three seasons on the show.”
Henry Cavill Has Not Revealed Why He Decided to Walk Away from The Witcher
Netflix
At present, Henry Cavill has not revealed why he ultimately decided to walk away from The Witcher series, with the actor simply offering his best wishes to his replacement, The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. Hemsworth will take over as Geralt for Season 4, with one of the producers behind The Witcher recently likening the role to that of James Bond.
The news has come as a massive disappointment to fans, with many saying they, too, will walk away from the show. A petition has already begun calling for Cavill to be brought back. Though, of course, that seems unlikely.
Thus, Henry Cavill will play Geralt for what is now the final time in the upcoming third season, which will find the monster hunter falling upon a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. The Witcher Season 3 does not yet have a release date, but will once again debut on Netflix.
