Henry Cavill as James Bond — not often does an actor seem so perfectly suited to a role. While it has yet to happen, Cavill is still very open to the idea, recently telling Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he would love to have the conversation with 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
There was once a time in Henry Cavill’s career when he was considered the ‘unluckiest man in Hollywood’ after losing out on not only James Bond, but also the roles of Batman and Superman as well. Cavill has now revealed that he was the second choice for the James Bond reboot Casino Royale back in 2006, with the studio ultimately deciding that Cavill was simply too young for what they had in mind.
“I love those guys, Barbara and Mike. I have very fond memories of having cocktails with them, I think at Mike’s house once. I had a vesper martini with Barbara, which I thought was fitting because it was for Casino Royale. It was a really, really fun time. And it was great to be in the mix of that stuff… Whether I’m considered for the role or not, I don’t know, but it would be fun to have the conversation for sure, and if I’m not then I just want to see what they do with it next because I think they’re amazing.”

Of course, Cavill eventually won the role of Clark Kent, aka Superman (a role that he has now returned to amid much applause). So, perhaps finally emerging as James Bond is next.
“They told me I was close. hey told me it was ultimately down to, and this is what I’ve been told, it was just down to me and Daniel (Craig), and I was the younger option. They obviously went with Daniel and I think it was an amazing choice to go with Daniel. I probably wasn’t ready at the time. I think Daniel did an incredible job over the past movies, so I’m happy they made that choice. It was a fun adventure at the time, and definitely gave a boost to my career. That was the key element of it. I was getting a lot of auditions, which I went to, which went really, really well.”
The Next James Bond Will Not be Played by a Younger Actor
Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing / Warner Bros. / 20th Century Studios
While there had been rumors that the next James Bond would veer toward youth, it seems that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson still have no interest in casting a younger actor. ”We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualize it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran,” Wilson explained. “He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something. He isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a thirty-something.”
Henry Cavill, meanwhile, will soon demonstrate his affinity as a spy in Argylle, which finds Cavill as a world-class spy suffering from amnesia.
