Anthong and Joe Russo are no strangers to blockbuster films, having been responsible for directing some of the most iconic moments in the MCU’s Infinity Saga from their first Marvel feature Captain America: The Winter Soldier to their last Avengers: Endgame. Now, the Russos are teaming up once again for the upcoming Netflix thriller The Gray Man, which, based on Netflix’s first look at the movie, also promises to be a huge success. The film has a $200 million budget and promises to be an action-packed adventure experience for audiences to enjoy later this year.
The movie is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney and is anticipated to be Netflix’s newest action franchise. The film follows former CIA operative, who is now an assassin known as the Gray Man, who hunts Gentry (Ryan Gosling) across the country. The film is also one of Chris Evans’ highly anticipated upcoming movies, marking a reunion with the Russo Brothers since his Captain America days. Here’s why we’re excited for The Gray Man.

The Russo Brothers are a Dream Pair
The Russo brothers are the power-duo who will be behind the upcoming spectacle, meaning audiences can expect big things from this release. The brothers have directed successful MCU films such as Avengers: Endgame and Joe and Anthony Russo have a production company, AGBO, which will handle the production of The Gray Man. Joe will also be writing the screenplay alongside Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who previously worked alongside the Russos on Captain America as well as Avengers.
This is the First Time Chris Evans & Ryan Gosling Will Be in a Movie Together

Until now, Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans have never starred in a movie together, and it’s a combination that we are certainly excited for. Ryan Gosling is set to star as Court Gentry, who is a highly trained CIA operative being chased by a former colleague known as Lloyd Hansen (played by Chris Evans). They are both huge Hollywood stars who are known for their success in action films and bring a lot of star power, so their collaboration will definitely be one to remember.
Aside from Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the rest of the cast are also shaping up to be a strong ensemble. Those who will be joining them include Ana De Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Julia Butters, Eme Ikwuakor and Scott Haze. The star-studded cast is making is very excited for what’s to come.
Expected to Be Part of a Multi-Film Franchise
It’s already been announced that there are plans to turn The Gray Man into a franchise. Mark Greaney’s book series has been used as the base for the plot, and there are currently 10 books that exist in the series, so is a lot of source material the franchise would be able to use. It’s also been suggested that Gosling will be returning for future series in the franchise.
It’s dependent on the success of The Gray Man on Netflix as to if it will definitely be renewed, and we can’t be certain that the Russo brothers and the whole cast would be back in these possible additions, however we certainly hope that this happens.
It’s Been Compared to ‘Heat’
Joe Russo has teased that the upcoming action thriller will be of the same calibre as Michael Mann’s Heat, which is one of the most acclaimed examples of an action thriller movie in history. Heat stars Al Pacino as Lieutenant Hanna, a detective who is slowly driven towards Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). The film was widely regarded as a cinematic masterpiece, so this comparison should not be taken lightly. The Gray Man would see Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans filling the shoes Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, making for another action-packed thriller.
