Futurama was a popular TV show about pizza delivery boy Phillip J. Fry who accidentally freezes himself in a cryogenics lap and ends up waking 1000 years later in the year 2999. From the same creators of the longest-running show on television The Simpsons, Futurama follows the adventures of Fry and his co-workers at Planet Express as they navigate the galaxy on their deliveries. The show ran for a total of seven seasons and even spawned a number of feature films, all of which can be streamed on Disney+.

After the recent confirmation that Futurama will make a comeback for its eighth season, the show has piqued the interest of new viewers, wanting many to know as much about the show as possible. As expected of any Sci-fi series, Futurama has a wide array of characters from the conniving industrialist Mom to the famous acting bot Calculon, Futurama’s characters are truly unique, especially the main cast. Here’s every Futurama main character, ranked.

7 Hermes

Hermes Conrad is a Rastafarian level 34 Bureaucrat, responsible for all the bookkeeping at Planet Express. As much as Hermes loves paperwork and filing, he also loves to limbo and was once an Olympic class limboer. While we don’t see much of Hermes, his character is unique enough to admire as well as his ambitious son Dwight and his exceedingly attractive wife LaBarbara. We see a number of ups and downs with Hermes and his relationships, from being demoted from his Bureaucrat level to losing his wife and son to his limbo rival and LaBarbara’s ex-husband Barbados Slim, Hermes sees no shortage of hardships, but he is also a source of great comedy as all he wants is to file some paperwork and enjoy his Manwich.

6 Amy Wong

Amy is the young intern of Professor Farnsworth and the daughter of the billionaire Wong family from Mars. Amy appears to be little more than just a pretty face for the professor to look at and while Amy may act like a spoiled princess at times, she actually does manage to finish her internship with Farnsworth and gets her PhD, but still stays with Farnsworth at Planet Express. Amy is boy-crazy in the beginning, but soon settles down with Zap Brannigan’s alien second-hand Kif, known for his cowardice. Amy is expected to return in the revival of the series.

5 Professor Farnsworth

     Fox

Probably one of the most underrated characters on the main cast is the overly senile 150-year-old mad scientist Professor Farnsworth. Farnsworth has also managed to gain status as the classic meme “I don’t want to live on this planet anymore”, a quote from Farnsworth himself. While Farnsworth was too focused on his work and never had any legitimate children, despite his relationship with “Mom” leading to their illegitimate love-child, Farnsworth has preserved his legacy through a clone of himself named Qbert.

4 Zoidberg

While Dr. Zoidberg may be the most hated character within the show, he is a fan-favourite. While many associate being a doctor with success and having a great deal of money, Zoidberg is the opposite. Living in a dumpster and eating anything put in front of him, Zoidberg’s antics do nothing but annoy his colleagues. Zoidberg’s infamous “woop woop woop” in which he runs away clacking his claws is based off of a similar noise made by Curly from The Three Stooges. Zoidberg’s stinky alien self has gained a great deal of popularity among the fans for his level of confidence despite everyone hating him.

3 Leela

Turanga Leela AKA Leela is a one-eyed mutant who was left at an Orphanarium by her parents under the pretense that she was an alien so that she could live above ground. Despite only having one eye, Leela makes a surprisingly good pilot at Planet Express, showing the most competence as the ship’s Captain and the leader of the delivery team. Leela seeks to find love for herself, but spurns Fry’s advances towards her in the hopes of finding someone better until she eventually gives in, unable to deny her feelings for Fry any longer. Voiced by Katey Sagal, actress known for her work on Married… with Children and Sons of Anarchy, she is in the lineup for the revival, ready to return to the character.

2 Fry

Yet another one on the list to become a meme is Phillip J. Fry AKA Fry whose narrow-eyed gaze became a widely used meme. The show’s main protagonist accidentally freezes himself and ends up in the future where he fits in more than he did in the 20th century. Fry’s lack of intelligence is not only hilarious but endearing and even keeps him out of trouble, as when the brains come to Earth and make everyone dumb except for Fry, who is already dumb, making him Earth’s saviour thanks to his vast stupidity. Fry is also madly in love with Leela and tries a number of romantic and not-ro romantic gestures to woo her, one of which manages to succeed as Leela and Fry end up married for a brief period of time. Fry, along with a number of other characters, is voiced by Billy West and is expected to return for the revival.

1 Bender

Selfish, immoral, and a lover of folk music is the robot Bender. This crook of a robot is the most loved character on the show. From his laughable catchphrase “bite my shiny metal ass” to his ridiculous antics, even going so far as to get a robot sex-change in order to win the Olympic medals he earned without being caught cheating. Voiced by the ever-famed voice actor John DiMaggio, responsible for characters like Jake the Dog from Adventure Time and Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War franchise, Bender managed to sneak his way into the hearts of audiences, making him the best character on the show. Unfortunately, John DiMaggio won’t be returning as Bender for the revival of Futurama, leaving the audience to wonder how they will get by without the original voice actor.
