Plot: What Will Invincible Season 2 Be About?

What made season 1 so great was that it took its time to introduce a world of villains, supporting characters, and subplots alongside the great threat that was Omni-Man. This would inherently allow season 2 to delve into storylines featuring already-established villains for Mark to contend with, now that Omni-Man is off-planet. More importantly, season 2 could also allow the series to explore the young hero’s human relationships.

Kirkman hinted heavily at what to expect for Season 2 when discussing Invincible’s future with AV Club:

The series creator noted that Omni-Man’s absence leaves Grayson without a mentor figure to turn to when seeking guidance. This purposefully sets up character development for the hero-becoming. Kirkman insists that Season 2 will feature a different story than its first and provide a more introspective exploration of Grayson’s character.

The Confirmed Cast of Invincible Season 2

Simmons is also expected to return as Omni-Man, even if his fate remains to be undetermined. The supremely talented Sandra Oh is likely to voice Debbie Grayson in Season 2, as is Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman. In order to uphold the storyline of the relationship between Grayson and Bennett, Zazie Beets is anticipated to rejoin the cast. Carrying over from Season 1’s collective of heroes, there is the pressure for Gillian Jacobs to return as Samantha Eve Wilkins (aka Atom Eve). Other superpowered beings expected to intertwine into Season 2 include: Rex “Rex Splode” Sloan (Jason Mantzoukas), Dupli-Kate Cha (Malese Jow), and Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin). Khary Payton and Mahershala Ali are likely to return to the roles of Black Samson and Titan, respectively, as is Kevin Michael Richardson as The Mauler Twins.

Existing outside of the main cast, Zachary Quinto may return as the voice of Robot. However, because Rudy Conners (voiced by Ross Marquand) is now Robot’s human host, the need for Quinto’s voice may not be necessary. That said, Robot plays a significant role in the Invincible comics as Robot, so that remains to be seen.

An interview between Collider and Yeun revealed that Season 2 has yet to actually enter its production phase. “We haven’t started. I know we’re starting at some point soon,” Yeun said during the conversation. “I’ve talked to Robert [Kirkman], here and there. He’s super excited about it. He thinks Season 2 is gonna be even better than Season 1, which I have no doubt about. If you go to his source material, Invincible is an incredible comic, and just thinking about how much story hasn’t been told from that run, it’s gonna be bonkers. I’m really excited about it.”

Considering that Invincible Season 2 is awaiting its production start date, it can be assumed that a release date can land Season 2 in 2023 at the earliest.
