Besides The Mandalorian and Moon Knight, another show streaming on the Disney+ app is High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Based on the popular Disney Channel Original movie trilogy, the third season of the mockumentary is arriving at Disney+ on July 27, 2022. The third season will run for eight episodes. It has also been officially announced that Disney+ has renewed the series for season 4, per Variety.

The show’s premise is that at a fictional version of East High School, where the original trilogy was filmed, where the students there have to put on a production of a musical. In season one, it’s a winter theater production of High School Musical: The Musical, which is the original movie. Season 2 is a spring musical of Beauty and the Beast.

The third season’s official synopsis is as follows: “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is set at Camp Shallow Lake, a sleepaway camp in California, as the Wildcats and their fellow campers are primed for an unforgettable summer ripe with romance, curfew-less nights and a taste of the great outdoors. With a high-stakes production of Frozen on the horizon AND a drama-filled “docu-series” of the production in the works, the Wildcats will attempt to show who is ‘best in snow’ without leaving anyone out in the cold.”

The soundtrack of the first two seasons of HSMTMTS has garnered two billion streams combined. Some examples of the show’s songs are “Let You Go,” “Granted,” “The Rose Song,” “Second Chance,” and “All I Want.” The series has also won multiple GLADD Media and Kid Choice Awards.

What to Expect in Future Seasons

In the words of series creator Tim Federle, “This series has been an epic adventure from the start and I’m beyond grateful that we get to keep making music, telling these stories, and showcasing these exceptional stars.”

Two of the cast members that the series helped shoot to stardom were Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. They play Nini and Ricky, whose on-again-off-again romance serves as the show’s heart. The pair has been broken up again in season three, though, with Rodrigo bumped down to guest star. Bassett will continue to star alongside Sofia Wylie, Matt Cornett, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Saylor Bell Curda, and Adrian Lyles.

Other guest stars for the third season are Aria Brooks, Liamani Segura, and Ben Stillwell will be recurring guest stars while Rodrigo, Corbin Bleu, Meg Donnelly, Jason Earles, Kate Reinders, Olivia Rose Keegan, Larry Saperstein, and Joe Serafini.

“This series continues to deliver best in class drama, humor, and heart,” said President of Disney Branded Television Ayo Davis when talking about the upcoming third season. Davis finished with the comment, “Tim Federle’s vision and interpretation of this legacy IP keeps evolving season over season and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Wildcats next.”

A trailer for season 3 of HSMTMTS has not been released yet but should be coming relatively soon, with July 27 merely two months away. A timeframe that gives newcomers plenty of time to catch up or longtime fans the opportunity to revisit. Besides that, fans of the show will also be delighted that HSMTMTS has also already been renewed for a fourth season.
