The series centers on an orphan named Lyra, played by Logan star Dafne Keen, who heads out in search of her missing friend. She soon discovers a kidnapping plot and a dangerous secret involving the rebellious Lord Asriel and the authoritarian Marisa Coulter, as well as finding out that she is the subject of a witches’ prophecy that she will change the world.

All of these mysteries are linked to an invisible cosmic substance called Dust, with Lyra embarking on an adventure that puts her on a collision course with our world and a teenager named Will, who is himself being pursued by figures connected to his vanished father.

His Dark Materials Season 3 Will Be the Show’s Last Outing

“Season three of His Dark Materials will see Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other,” the official logline for His Dark Materials Season 3 reads.

Executive producer Dan McCulloch adds, “The moment we started season one of His Dark Materials, we had mapped out all three novels to know the direction in which we were heading. Every detail and character within this incredible work of fiction has been analyzed and discussed for four years now, and to finally arrive in the many worlds of The Amber Spyglass is thrilling.”

The final moments of His Dark Materials Season 2 saw the Angels pledge their support to Lyra’s father, Lord Asriel, and his plan to go to war against the Authority. If that were not already dramatic enough, Lyra finds herself abducted by her mother, Marisa Coulter.

“Season 3 is wild,” says Dafne Keen of the show’s final outing. “It’s 100 percent the weirdest thing I’ve ever shot in my entire life.”

Starring Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel Belacqua, Amir Wilson as Will Parry, and Nina Sosanya as Elaine Parry, as well as the voices of Kit Connor as Pantalaimon, and the late Helen McCrory as Stelmaria, HBO has confirmed that His Dark Materials Season 3 will release in December 2022.
