Hollywood took to social media to react and share their thoughts on ‘slap-gate,’ an incident which saw King Richard star Will Smith suddenly take to the stage during the live event to assault the comedian, Chris Rock. Smith left his seat after the comedian made a joke at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith’s expense, striking Rock in the face before returning to the audience and yelling at Rock. Now, stars such as Rosie O’Donnell, director Rob Reiner, and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill have turned to Twitter to offer their two cents.

While he has been nominated for an Academy Award several times, Will Smith was finally awarded a golden statue at the event for his performance in the biographical sports drama, King Richard. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin, King Richard centers on Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena. Armed with a clear vision and a brazen, 78-page plan, Richard is determined to write his two daughters into history. Training on tennis courts in Compton, Calif., Richard shapes the girls’ unyielding commitment and keen intuition. Together, the Williams family defies seemingly insurmountable odds and the prevailing expectations laid before them.

Unfortunately, what should have been a deeply historical moment and a high point in Smith’s career has now been marred by his violent reaction towards Chris Rock.

The criticisms toward Will Smith though don’t stop at the assault itself. Upon winning the Academy Award for Best Actor, Smith took the stage once again to accept and delivered a speech during which he apologized to everyone except Chris Rock, and said that “love will make you do crazy things.”

Others are even concerned that what Will Smith did to Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards could set a dangerous precedent for other comedians, while others think this could mark a serious downturn in the actor’s career.

While the criticism continues to flow toward Smith, his son Jaden Smith has also since taken to social media to support his parents.

While the shocking slap heard around the world has dominated headlines ever since, we would be remiss not to at least mention some of the awards that were handed out during the 94th Academy Awards. CODA, a coming-of-age comedy-drama flick written and directed by Sian Heder and which follows Emilia Jones as the titular child of deaf adults (CODA) and the only hearing member of a deaf family, who attempts to help her family’s struggling fishing business, won the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as several other awards. These include Best Supporting Actor, which was won by CODA star Troy Kotsur, who became the first male deaf actor to win the Oscar.

Other wins from the night include Jane Campion for Best Director for The Power of the Dog, Jessica Chastain for Best Actress for her role as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose for her role as Anita in West Side Story.
