The holiday season brings about some certainties. There will be an argument about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, Mariah Carey will dominate the music charts, and certain movies will get their annual outing for many people. One such movie is the Macaulay Culkin classic Home Alone, and thanks to the film’s inclusion on Disney+, it has blasted up the streaming charts on the platform to claim the top spot.

Even with a number of new movies and shows available on Disney+, the pull of the 1990 classic is almost too much for viewers to resist, ensuring that the film is a hit year after year. This is something that has been made even easier thanks to Disney+. The movie is available to watch along with the other Home Alone movies, including the less-than glowingly reviewed Home Sweet Home Alone.

There is something about the original movie that outshines all of the sequels and all the movies that attempted to copy the film’s success. A combination of an endearing performance by Culkin, combined with the painful comedy of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern being pummeled by paint cans, irons, doors, and more, is something that just never gets boring and has never been done better.

The Home Alone movies did not hold back when it came to the sheer brutality of the way Kevin McCallister defends himself against Pesci and Stern’s burglars. This usually required the work of a stuntman or two, but there were some moments when the actors had to take on the stunt work themselves. Recently, Pesci reminisced about playing Marv in the movies, and in particular, how one stunt ended up leaving him scarred. He said:

The popularity of Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York has seen the movie spawn other sequels, but once the franchise lost Culkin, Pesci, and Stern, the whole thing just became almost a parody of itself. This was not helped in any way by last year’s release of Home Sweet Home Alone, which saw a young boy being left at home when his family went on holiday. Of course, a couple wants to get their hands on an heirloom that happens to be in the house, and the home must be defended with some not-quite-so-brutal traps.

“In addition to the expected bumps, bruises, and general pains that you would associate with that particular type of physical humor, I did sustain serious burns to the top of my head during the scene where Harry’s hat is set on fire. I was fortunate enough to have professional stuntmen do the real heavy stunts.”

This year’s streaming chart has proven that sometimes it is hard to beat classic and original movies. While there is always a need to remake and reboot franchises decades after their initial success, certain films will continue to shine through regardless of how many new versions are made, including Home Alone as a prime example.
