We are used to directors and producers sharing behind the scenes video clips that give a visual tease as to what fans will get to see when a movie or show makes it to screen. However, Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has delivered a completely different behind the scenes experience by recording a video outside the editing suite to give a unique audio only teaser for some of the horrifying sounds that will be heard when the movie makes its debut on HBO Max later this year. For any fan of the Evil Dead, we all know just how disturbing those sounds can be even without a visual to accompany them.
Evil Dead Rise will be one of the first in the series that is not predominantly set in a cabin the woods and also doesn’t feature franchise icon Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, but with both Campbell and original director Sam Raimi working as part of the crew and Cronin being picked by Raimi himself to take on the movie, we can still expect a gory, horror-filled ride. While Army of Darkness put Ash Williams in a Medieval setting, and Ash vs Evil Dead brought the Deadites to a town, Evil Dead Rise will find the Necronomicon Ex Mortis wreaking havoc in an urban setting. Despite the changes, Cronin has previously made it clear that there will be some consistencies with the rest of the franchise.
“For me, the key thing that I kept reminding myself of, when you’re in the trenches and you’re developing something, was to make sure it’s a roller coaster, to make sure that it has twists and turns and that it’s visceral and engaging,” Cronin shared with ComicBook.com in 2020. “Some of that is going back to what I just said, is that I wanted to create a roller coaster of terror. That was really, really the key for me. My memories of Evil Dead, when I watched them at a young age, was always marveling at “how does this even exist?” It just continues to poke at my brain and refresh every time I watch it. To boil it down into an even simpler thing, was that it’s experiential. It has to be a horror experience. That’s the key, and that’s what I’ve been trying to achieve with it.”
Evil Dead Rise Is All About The Book For Bruce Campbell
Bruce Campbell is synonymous with the Evil Dead franchise, having been there from the start of the series even before The Evil Dead made it to screens in 1981, so fans were sad when the B-Movie legend announced that he will likely not play Ash on screen again other than possibly in a voice role. Campbell has assured fans that won’t mean they are nothing getting anything less than a full on Evil Dead movie.
“People can actually call it what [they] want: Sequel, remake, reimagining. It really is just another Evil Dead movie. It’s book-centric. It’s all about the Necronomicon. Where does this book wind up and what happens to it over the millennia? In this case, it’s set in the city, it’s no more cabin in the woods. It’s entirely different, unsuspecting heroines who are going to save the day. It’s filming now in New Zealand, with some of their amazing crews down there and they’re well into it. Rob Tapert is the hands-on producer and we’re all very involved in the script. We all jump in at various times to chime in.”
Evil Dead Rise will premiere on HBO Max on October 22nd this year, just in time for Halloween.
