House of the Dragon has introduced audiences to a new common-born character, who has proven to be a fascinating feature in the series despite his low birth. Ser Criston Cole, a soldier forged in the Dornish Marches, could have a major role to play in the inevitable conflicts of upcoming episodes.
The History Between Ser Criston Cole and Princess Rhaenyra
Over the course of only a few episodes, Ser Criston Cole and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen have managed to develop a complicated relationship. The Princess first takes notice of Ser Cole during a royal tournament in the first episode of the series, when he bests Daemon Targaryen in single combat.

In one of her first acts after being chosen as heir to her father, King Viserys, Princess Rhaenyra is tasked with selecting a new member of the Kingsguard. Though the role often goes to high-born members of powerful families, Rhaenyra selects Ser Cole to fill the position, as he is the only candidate with any experience on the battlefield. This decision angers the former Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower, who feels that Rhaenyra wasted a valuable chance to forge political alliances by choosing the low-born Cole.
Later, after Princess Rhaenyra almost “couples” (as Ser Otto later describes the encounter) with her uncle Daemon, she returns to her bed chamber drunk and invites Ser Cole into the room, where they proceed to engage in activities unbecoming of a Queen to be. This establishes a connection between the characters that is later explored when Ser Cole laments the impending marriage between Laenor and Rhaenyra, and it’s possible that their relationship could shape the future of Westeros.
Lady Alicent Hightower Stops Ser Criston Cole Moments Before a Suicide Attempt
If news of Ser Criston Cole and Princess Rhaenyra’s illicit affair were to get out, it would mean almost certain death for Cole. At the wedding between Rhaenyra and Laenor Valeryon, it comes to light that Joffrey Lonmouth, the long-time romantic partner of Laenor, is aware of their fling. He blackmails Ser Cole with this knowledge so that his relationship with Laenor will also be kept a secret. Enraged, Ser Cole bludgeons Joffrey, ultimately killing him in front of the entire wedding party.

Ser Cole then flees the castle. At the end of the episode, he draws a small blade. He seems poised to attempt suicide by slicing himself open before he is stopped by Lady Alicent Hightower, who also knows about his relationship with Rhaenyra. Some coy words between Lady Alicent and powerful wedding guests seemed to suggest that a conflict is brewing in the Kingdom, so it would be a wise move for her to gain the favor of Ser Cole.
Where Do Ser Criston Cole’s Allegiances Lie?
Given his tumultuous journey over the first few episodes, it’s unclear exactly where Ser Criston Cole will fall in any upcoming conflicts. Of course, he cares deeply for Princess Rhaenyra, but he is aware that he may have to keep his distance from her to avoid the truth of their affair coming to light. Additionally, given the fact that Lady Alicent is now aware of their relationship, along with the brief interaction they had that halted Ser Criston’s suicide attempt, he may find himself bound to her.
Ser Criston is a demonstrably talented fighter, and his military expertise will prove invaluable to whichever side he chooses to fight for. He will need to balance his personal affections with political considerations, as well as take care to guard his secret.
It’s always refreshing to see a common-born character rise through the ranks in Westeros. While Ser Criston Cole will never be king or even a lord, he is a brave and valiant warrior who will likely continue to make a difference in the Kingdom. It will be fascinating to see what direction his character takes in upcoming episodes.
