Ryan Condal is immensely important to House of the Dragon, serving as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner on the series. The Game of Thrones prequel wouldn’t be possible without him, and HBO recognizes it. Condal, along with author George R.R. Martin, is the mind behind the spinoff, spending years of his life getting the story from Fire & Blood (the novel the series is based on) to a working script, all the way to its premiere in August. The series, which has seen enormous success since its debut, is in good hands with Condal, who will be the lone showrunner ahead of season 2 following Miguel Sapochnik’s exit.
According to a report from Deadline, HBO wants to keep Condal around by renewing his overall deal with the company. He originally signed an agreement in 2020 after HBO ordered House of the Dragon straight-to-series, and the show was quickly renewed for a second season following its debut. The spinoff has received great reviews through seven episodes, with an average of 29 million viewers each week in the U.S. alone.

HBO wanted to quickly act on the success, as reviving the Game of Thrones fanbase was a monumental task following its conclusion in 2019. Condal and the rest of the House of the Dragon crew have surpassed every expectation put on them so far, and fans eagerly anticipate what’s to come in the series.

Ryan Condal is a big Game of Thrones fan, proven by his knowledge of Westeros and the world George R.R. Martin created. The showrunner released a statement provided by Deadline following his HBO deal, stating how honored he is to continue working on House of the Dragon.
“When I picked up that paperback copy of A Game of Thrones over two decades ago, I wasn’t even sure I would make it as a screenwriter,” he says. “To find myself here, having co-created a series set in Westeros, is almost beyond thought. I am incredibly fortunate. I’m grateful to George R.R. Martin for believing in me and to HBO for placing their trust in me. I’m thrilled to be partnering with HBO to tell the next chapter in the Targaryen saga, and I’m hoping that it’s just one of many to come.”
Condal has hinted at an interest in picking up various Targaryen storylines, whether they focus on The Dance of the Dragons as House of the Dragon does or an entirely different era. But first, he will need to complete what he started, which is sure to include three to four seasons at least. House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max every Sunday at 9 pm E.T.
