The time has come for House of the Dragon to arrive on HBO and HBO Max with the Game of Thrones spinoff reaching its premiere date. Set hundreds of years before the events of its parent series, House of the Dragon will follow an all-new cast of characters with completely different storylines. House Targaryen will play a major part in the story, showing fans what happened with Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors long before she would become the “Mad Queen.”
As of now, the spinoff series hasn’t been officially renewed for season, and that’s likely due to HBO waiting to see just how well-received the new show is before committing to another season. With that said, series showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal are already looking ahead to where things can go in season 2. Speaking with Collider ahead of the season 1 premiere, Condal explained how a plan has been mapped for the potential second season.

Should the series get renewed, the second season would dive deeper into the history of House Targaryen. Condal goes on to tease some of the Targaryen-based stories that could be further explored in season 2, but he adds that whether or not a renewal happens will depend upon how much fans enjoy season 1.
House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, 2022.
