The planned House Party reboot has gotten an update courtesy of one of the original film’s leading stars. Christopher “Play” Martin, who appeared in the 1990 film alongside his Kid ’n Play partner Christopher “Kid” Reid, recently had a chat with TMZ on the current status of the film. Martin addressed how the project is in “good hands” with producer LeBron James, who has been very hands-on with the project. Here’s what he said when asked how involved James has been with the film.

Martin also speaks about new plans that are said to be in place for how to release the film. It had previously been reported that the House Party remake would be developed to release exclusively for streaming on HBO Max. According to Martin, the reason that didn’t end up happening is that James is now looking to have the film released in theaters.

“He’s very involved. He has complete ownership, to my understanding, at this point.”

Previously, it had also been reported that Calmatic had signed on to direct the new House Party. Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori (Atlanta) wrote the script. It stars Jacob Latimore (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022) and Tosin Cole (Doctor Who). James is reportedly producing alongside Maverick Carter. Spencer Beighly and Jamal Henderson executive produced for SpringHill alongside Reginald Hudlin and Warrington Hudlin.

“The release was supposed to be on HBO Max July 28th, and then no one knew what happened because it got pulled from the schedule. But… I’ll leave it like this. From a very reliable source, it probably don’t get more reliable than this, than the King himself, that it’s going to be a theatrical release.”

Martin also spoke about how excited he and Kid are about the new film. He admits that there’s always a risk that the fans won’t like the new version every time a remake is made, but with that said, Martin is stoked for the film to be released for a new generation and is eager to see what people think about it.

House Party will be released in theaters on Dec. 9, 2022. You can read the official synopsis for the new House Party below.

“I don’t know how people will feel about how good the film itself will be, that, we’ll have to see. But with all of that being said, I think it’s exciting, I think it’s exciting for Kid and I, I think it’s exciting for a new generation of actors that are involved now. But when you’re dealing with a classic, it kind of speaks for itself… Yeah, it’s exciting.”
